Post by parkie »

so heres the low down: i am just wondering if there is a way or a program to ' kick' certain IP adresses from your local network. i mean say your friend brings over his computer and you know his ip and you want to ban him or kick him off the network is there a way? like a program or some code i can use to make a porgram or something??

Some routers have it where when you interface with them (in the management and settings) you can kick specific IP addressed. I can't say much more as I've never had to do that myself, I"ve only see it as "ban" on the U.S. Robotics router I have.

you can add his MAC address to the router and prevent him from connecting to your network at all.

Why would you need to kick your friend off your network? Why not just do as Felino said and unplug him?

Well you can't just block the IP address from working because they're dynamic and change every so often through DHCP. (8 days is the default lease period in Windows Server 2003; it may be shorter on your router because it's Wi-Fi.) About a week after you block his address he'll just have a new one. You need to blacklist his MAC address. (MAC addresses are burned into the hardware and don't change.)

A better idea would be to whitelist your devices' MAC addresses, so only stuff you approve of is allowed to access your network.

Of course don't let him know you're doing this, because it's very easy to spoof MAC addresses, if he knows or can find out the MAC of one of your comps. If this is a wireless network you're talking about, however, don't even bother with MAC filtering. Turn on WPA or WPA2, as those are about the safest security measures for WiFi at this time.

ok thanks . why not just pull out the cable ? cause that way they see me pull it out and know that you are going to be kicked off the network. its way funner to muck around and then kick them.
