Hey Metallica Man..........Megadeth FTW! :P

How bout instead of playing guitar..........play BASS!
In my opinion, THE BEST way to learn a song well and quickly is through the use of this funky device: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... ku=241255X
Its portable plus its main function is that slows down the CD so you can play along to fast riffs and solos (Painkiller solo FTW too). Although yes, WMP is free.....er and thats why the only downside would obviously be the price, but to me it was worth it.

Normally id say screw the books just learn fromt tabs, but thanks to a whole slew of legal cases pretty much all but http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ is left, however their tabs are a bit unreliable at times

When you're feeling a bit more confidant with your playing id suggest getting http://www.band-in-a-box.com/ to jam along with. It will give you basic drum guitar and bass rhytms to play along with and a whole bunch of otehr cool stuff too.

P.S play bass

It's definitely worth it IMO. The CD has all the songs that are in the book so you can jam with it.
I'd imagine right now you wish you were a cuttlefish...

The way I learned was look up some guitar tabs (and how to read them) of some songs you like and try to play them. Come up with your own technique and then learn the music theory or whatever, I haven't gotten that far yet.
