Where is the internet?

So right now i'm posting to all you other nerds and creeps.
I'm a 42 year old fat pimply greasy cheeto fingered world of warcraft moderator who now resides in his parents basement living off a steady diet of mac'n'cheese served with lucky charms in chocolate milk.
I'm sittin' at my computer lookin' at you guys's posts through my 1982 esque nerdy glasses. And for a moment.....in between shoving cheeto's and diet coke down my gullet.......I actually thought for once in my short miserable life.........Where is the place i'm talking in?.......where is the internet located? am i sending binary code to the long lost viking moonlander on mars that arrived in '77? am I sending binary through some fat lady's blubber? am I sending binary through the lost city of atlantis (which is the place I really want to go in the original tombraider that I could find more info on IF SOME MOD DIDN'T LOCK THAT THREAD FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I WASN'T FRIGGIN DONE WITH IT GUYS!
UNLOCK IT AND I'LL GIVE YOU A BIG COOKIE! plus lara croft is HOT! :p )
so where is the internet's base people? WHERE IS IT ALL GOING?

The internet is made up of everything you can touch (hardware) that's connected on a grand scale to a series of networks (nodes) that are connected to each other. You can think of these nodes like single computers connected in a LAN (although there are actually millions of devices networked into a single node).

The World Wide Web is the software that drives the internet. It is responsible for all the HTTP, FTP, SMTP, and other miscellaneous transfer protocols that unite the internet to all platforms. It is WWW that allows your HTTP request to be routed along the correct path to the right server, via the shortest way.

:., no one actually owns the internet. It is owned by each one of us, by the information we provide and allow to be accessed.

yeah, but all the websites....surely there are too many too fit on a hardrive......
Gee.....the fact of everything having a mind of it's own reminds me of T2....that was a good movie.....even ben likes it.(you have to read really carefully in his book to find out facts about him.)
that fact was on page no.......wait......I don't have my book with me so i briefly remember it being in the soldering section.

Websites are stored individually on their own locations in the network, called servers. Servers serve out web pages based on the content of the HTTP request that a client (browser) sends out, then sends the page back in the form of an HTTP response.

A server can be a regular PC with a hard drive, or a professional rack-mount solution with some kind of database software driving the hard drive.

ITS LIKE TECHNOLOGY OWNS US.
(and in a way it does. just look at us-on a forum at 12:45 at night!)
so are you saying that a website made by a computer is stored on that computer? and if the computer is turned off, people can still sdee the site?

Sorry, what?

Oh I see your logic... Well normally humans make the websites, but if you have dynamically updated websited coded in, say, PHP, then the computer will generate the HTML code depending on what it is told to do by its programmer.

Yes, the website is stored on that computer. So if you turn it off, the hard drive will no longer get power, therefore there will be no more website.

The WWW is a little more complicated. When you type a website's URL into a web browser, your web browser actually talks to a DNS or a 'Domain Name Server', which sends your browser the IP address to the server you want to connect to.

Back before the WWW, the internet still existed but had limited uses. Then, in the early nineties, the WWW started emerging & by the late nineties the WWW had exploded.
