HD DVD FTW

Post by warmachine »

Yes folks, it appears the Format War may be approaching its end. As noted on these sites:

http://www.tgdaily.com/2007/01/11/ces20 ... d_blu_ray/
http://www.sgknox.com/2007/01/11/no-porn-on-blu-ray/

the porn industry has decided to adopt HD DVD as it's next-gen video format. The word "adopt," however, may be of poor choice, as Sony has denied the industry use of Blu-Ray technology; perhaps "forced" is a better word. Anyone old enough to remember the format wars of the previous generation (VHS v. Betamax) probably knows the dirty little secret why the Betamax faded into the night and VHS ruled as champ: porn. Due to Sony's disallowing of the industry to utilize Betamax technology, it folded, and is now only used by high-end media production systems, such as television stations, where quality of video is top-priority (as the Betamax yielded higher quality video than VHS). So, in light of the multi-billion dollar porn industry's "adoption" of HD DVD, where do you, the internet-goer, see Blu-Ray and HD DVD heading? Collapse for Blu-Ray? Prosperity for HD DVD?

First of all, I think (only think I'll admit, I wasn't really paying attention to world events back then as I'm only 19 now) that porn's effect on that format war is blown out of proportion. I highly doubt that porn was the main factor in the fall of this betamax. I simply think that it's one of those things where the subject of something taboo like porn comes along and gets everyone talking. Also, even if porn were the cause of the rise of the VHS tape, it's less likely to have an effect on Blu-Ray Vs. HDDVD due to the fact that most people who have porn these days have it downloaded on their computers and thus need no disc to store it.

Don't say that, the porn industry, if anyone, want their movies to be somehow copy protected. However I don't think the porn industry's choice will decide which format will reign (Neither Disney's nor Warner Bros') Simply because it's relatively easy to combine the two formats into one player, it's already been done, and I think that in 5 years all major manufacturers of disc-based movie players will suport both formats.

Hasn't the whole hddvd vs. blueray thing been discussed before? Don't see any reason for more talk on the subject.

I'm almost sure that the whole "porn" thing has been discussed here before, as well :?...
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

The war will not end in some flashy explosion. Looking at current developments, it looks like it will just fade away, without any explicitly clear winner.

A player capable of accepting both HD DVD and Blu-Ray media is in the works (don't know how they got around the various legal hurdles), and another format has been developed which works in both Blu-Ray drives and HD DVD drives. I'll try to dig up the sources.

HD combo drive

Google Search with many examples

"LG has also produced a player that is capable of playing both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats." Wikipedia (Blu-Ray Disc\Applications\Compatibility)

There wasn't porn on the Betamax? I could've sworn I saw a beta movie at Goodwill the other day called "Dirty Schoolgirls" or something to that effect.

I think a much bigger part of the VHS victory was its ability to hold feature length films. When first introduced, Betamax could hold 1 hour of video, while VHS could hold 4. You would need multiple Betamax cassettes to hold a single movie, as opposed to 1 VHS.

Imagine a having all 6 Star Wars episodes in Betamax. That would be, what, 3 per episode... (counts on fingers) 18 tapes. Now add the 3 Alien movies. The Lord of the Rings would have needed something like 4 tapes per movie.

Sony broke a cardinal rule when they made betamax: NEVER trade-off convenience for the sake of quality- NEVER EVER. The moment you need to change tapes half-way through, you lose the support of every couch potatoe on Earth.

Of course, neither HD DVD nor Blu-ray suffer from an inability to store full-length movies, so that won't come into play during this war.

well, blu-ray technically has more storage space, for better video quality.

Nah, porn won't decide what format will won because:

1. it's free on the internet. Google it, it's a fact. :P

2. HD is too revealing.

3. porn is free on the internet!

The fact that HD-DVDs will soon hold 51 GB (1 GB more than Blu-ray) puts HD-DVDs in the lead. Toshiba just created the first Tripple Layer HD-DVD which holds 17 GB Per Layer i think.

HD-DVD FTW 8)

I was just thinking, what if in a few years instead of optical disks, we have HDD cartridges? Think of all the video they could hold! (they would have to get a lot cheaper, and find some way to make the idestructible by shaking but it could happen)

I was thinking the same thing a week ago. Something like a UMD with a HDD platter inside, then it would slide in. It would be pretty cheap also.

Are there any HDD's that have swappable platters? (I was wondering this a few days ago)

EDIT: just answered on page two
