Do you have to do every single pixel to make one character? If so, forget it. I couldn't find the time to do that. But props to your nice characters there They look neat.

Most people just take sprites from games and edit them a bit. I used to do a lot of MegaMan-based sprites (hence I recognized the basis for typamc's right away) as well as animations, but that hobby went out the window when everything went to 3D polygons. Pretty nice stuff, by the way.

I remember that Lysekoid and Zephiroth X could make some really cool, completely custom sprites. There's a few things by Zephiroth X (aka The Cold Mage) here, although I've seen him do ones that were even better than these.

GIMP or Photoshop I'd use, just because layering tools make it harder to screw yourself over.

Download a demo of flash and animate tehm in there

and yes you would probably have to frame by frame it mostly
