i guess the thinking is that with a really hot iron, you can quickly heat up the solder on the surface without allowing the heat to penetrate much, whereas with a colder iron you might have to hold it there for a long time and wait for the whole battery to heat up to melting temperature (about 200 deg. C).
for this reason, a hotter iron is probably better, but that dosent mean the absolute hottest iron possible is the best choice.

woot! old thread! well my question is about batteries + heat so it's raised for a reason. is hot glue hot enough to damage a NiMH battery? i'm finally assembling my Gameboy64 and i just want to know if it's safe. how do you secure your batteries (the internal kind, not removable ones)?
EDIT: i think i got a solution: wrap tape around the batteries and glue to that. but still, would batteries get damaged without the tape?

I think it will be fine. Exactly. If you're soldering to a battery you don't want to hold the iron on there too long or it might wreck it, you only want it on there a couple seconds. That and a lower heat iron might not even be able to heat up the metal to the point solder would stick to it because the entire metal area of the battery would act as a heatsink pulling heat from where you want it. I had this trouble when I was soldering to the large ground area on the side of an N64. well my question's answered.
i soldered to my batteries (actually i soldered to the tabs but same difference) without the tabs even getting warm so here's how i did it:
-lemon juice! on the battery
-melt blob of solder on soldering iron tip
-touch the lemon juice with it really quick, it'll stick
-tin wire
-touch tinned wire to the solder on the battery
-melt it really quickly with at least a 30w iron
-say "Woohoo!"
