1) Slap your friend across the face for buying an ipod. They're made to fail after a year or two, regardless of how well you care for them.
2) Slap him again.
3) Go buy him a Creative Zen or something.
On the size issue, is an 8" x 6" by 3 " deep considered big because thats what im going to fit it into. Mind you, this isnt you standered portable. It will be sitting on your lap with an flip screen. I sacrificed onboard controllers for more confortable real ones so you can actually set it down somewhere and play it. This portable is more like a laptop then a handheld.

hey like i said im working on the same thing kinda and I have all the parts figured out and i just need to amass the wealth to buy it all...
Good luck I will be with you in spirit
PS. you will need an iductor on the cathode end of the battery
also try decreasing the amount of wires by combining some of the ground wires

I refuse to dignify myself with an intelligent and witty signature
i just looked over that diagram and it's pretty good except for these issues:
-there's too many wires
connect all the grounds (power, video, audio, and everything use the same ground) and it'll work just as well ut be less messy
-you're 3.3v convertor is wired backwards and has no cap or inductor
-the fan should be connected directly to the N64 power, not on it's own power switch.
-i assume the external plug goes to a charger, not a direct power source, right?
otherwise it should work fine

addressing daguuy's concerns:
1. On the final diagram and physical portable I will combine the grounds but for here, seperating the grounds helps me out when constructing.
2. with the 3.3 converter, I did wire it backwards and without the cap. when drawing the diagram, I already did that wiring so i felt no need to get it compleatually right. Again, on the final copy, it will be fixed
3. About the fan, I decided to make it its own switch because it is LOUD! Since its not needed for casual play, I want to be able to turn it off and on seperatually when and when its not needed. Plus i like a certain degree of control of my portable, plus plus, I like switches
4. yes, the external plug does go to a charger. I wouldent input 110v into my little battery
