You could get a used portable TV and modify that because they are slightly bigger than a GBC screen and are backlit.
A Famicom portable sounds like a great idea, but I reccomend you use the AV Famicom, which was released later and has several advantages to the original for the purposes of portabilisation. Firstly it gives off composite video as opposed to the RF-only of the original and it's controllers aren't hardwired, so you can have a 2nd player port.

And how old are you? Mostly everyone here has a job (unless you use gift money) to supply cash for their portable. I know that i will make around $4000.00 over the summer (2-3 days a week) and that isnt much. If you don't have $40.00, or even $100.00 for that matter, don't try to build a portable, m'kay

On another note... I'm building an NESp for $95, I guess that isn't too bad
Then you could sell 'em for around $150, build another, repeat. I may try this .

sorry to hear that man. I also have very little money to work on my project. So far I guess I have spent about 50 bucks on it total (max), over the course of about a year and a half. I have not been using a famiclone since my pocket change has made getting a cheap one elusive, but I payed 30 bucks for my screen and spent various other amounts of money on an extra controller, some super glue, solder and flux, and other misc. things. 30 bucks was the very least I could get the screen for. Its the part that kills in this kind of project. I intend to make a special case just for the screen so that I can plug it into other portables I make. That way I don't have to buy a new screen for each one. (If I ever make more than one, well see. ) As for getting money I say "good luck." I know your situation.
