PStwo USB to Hip Gear

Post by TitaniumHamster »

Hi everybody, I'm TH, and I'm building a portable PS2.

I've got pretty much everything under control, except I havent gotten the Hip Gear screenpad in yet, and I'm wondering, Is it possible to power the Screen off USB? Seeing ladyadas' Game grrrl is really getting my confused on how much the Hip gear thingy can take, and can't...

Although there is a small possibility as the screen itself uses old 5v, I really doubt it will work. USB 1.x doesn't have a lot of current, you could try it on say a computer that has the same ports (2.0 will give you false positive) and see if it works.

But really way would you want to use USB anyways? An IC would give you a sure amount of voltage and current output, really a much more reliable power source.

Well, the USB would clear up a few power sources for me, but and allow me to relly less on the "Initial Rechargable DVD thing", but thanks anyway.

It does work suprisingly, I used the USB port on my computer and it powered the NES and the hipgear (thats NOAC) and worked. I guess if you really wanted to, you could, but why use a hip gear on a PS2 portable?

I know, it seems pretty crazy, a less than 3 inch screen for such a system like a PS2, but, the Hip Gear is what I've learned best, and I'm pretty used to looking at screen that size on my DS and GBA, and, it's cheap!

However, if I can find a Slightly (key word "slightly", I don't want no PSone screen) larger screen for the money, I'm pick up that.

I dunno, I'd go for the PSOne screen if I were you. It's an EXCELLENT price, ($30 at EB) for a 5" screen. And trust me, I don't know if you've ever seen one in person before, but they're way smaller than you'd think. Plus, the PS2 is a 128 bit system, it NEEDS a decent sized screen to be seen well. Don't risk not even being able to read the text on the screen because your screen res is too low. The PS2 has a max resolution of 640X480, the same resolution as a PSOne screen. If you go any lower, the results could be catastrophic.

Hmmmm...

My Ps2 portable case is just slightly wider than the PStwo itself, and is shaped like a original gameboy. I don't really like the PSone screen much for MANY reasons, other than size, and I would much rater have a Mad Catz one or some other square shaped PCB or a product built for the PS2.

However, if i can find one locally (probually) I might try it out for a n64 based project.

ermm, I find that pretty hard to believe if you used the slim PS2. The input is 8.5v which is then proken down to 5v by 2 7805s (one for audio/video and one for USB) and then 3.3v (3A) by a DC-DC reg. Hard to believe you could power all that off a 1amp 7805 but maybe I'm just missing something (another reg on the board possibly?)
