That is a widely believed myth that is completely false, and easily proven so. Go to the settings of your machine and change your monitor's refresh rate to 60Hz. Then change it to 85Hz ...

Yeah, connecting some of the wires backwards on the psx caused the power LED to blink really fast. I think it was a remnant of 50Hz going into it or something.
