what would be the reason to get a tact switch with 4 prongs (sorry if thats wrong not the correct way to put it im a noob) instead of 2?

I dont get it. I know the wires are attached to the controller's main board but what needs to be at the other end for it to work? in other words how do i set up a button to respond to a function with the extended wires? sorry if this is extreme novice
