is that he is just connecting pin A01 and A32 together. Thus tying the ground connections together. Might not be strictly necessary, but you're probably better off doing it.

the schematic for another modle at atariage has what appears to be a potentiometer wired for those spots:

Best guess, when you don't have the pin connected to anything, it "floats" at 5V because of its internal circuitry. Of course it could be any number of other reasons as well.

I would expect this type of thing to be real hit-and-miss even among chips that are otherwise identical.

Opps forgot to mention, the backup utility is only present in "Pro" versions of XP, so if you got the home version or MCE, never mind :)

I've done this before using the Backup utility in windows using the "Automated System Recovery" wizard. It creates a backup of the hard drive and makes a floppy that has some essential stuff on it.

You then boot the computer using the Windows XP cd with only the new hard drive presetnt and hit F2 ...

Looks like I already mentioned this one.....

I had this problem on an ArcadeVGA card once. It has to do with the way modern video cards detect the presence of a monitor. When I asked the maker of the card he suggested exactly what you have already tried, putting a resistor inline with each of the RGB lines (3 total). I don't recall the values ...
