We were getting too many bots registering and practically zero legitimate members, so the decision was made to turn off registration until a way to stop the bots could be found.

Ah, I wondered what had happened. A buddy on FB was asking how I got registered and I had no idea what he was talking about :(

I'll send him this link and hopefully he can just wait it out.

Do we have some sort of question-based filter (IE: Who owns this site? Hint: Scroll to top.)
A bot would have to be overly specific to get past that one.
And then you could just prune the members with 0 posts, and BAM

And while they're at it next year, it might be a decent idea to fix this extreme latency issue. Like, it takes like five minutes to register that you posted something. This is painful while editing a post and can also cause double posting.
