NOAC Video problems, possible incorrect wiring

Post by dudasquid »

I've been working on a small, portable, NOAC-based NES console based on some of the concepts I've found on these forums and I figured since I've got enough of the wiring complete (that is, everything except for the reset button and controller) I'd give it a shot and test that it's working using the inbuilt games.

Things did not go well.

When connected to the tv a fuzzy black and white, horizontal striped pattern appeared with no sound, when i swapped the av-cables around (video port to audio lead) the same image appeared but the colours were inversed. I suspect that I have incorrectly wired something... Either that or my NOAC is ruined :(

This is what the picture on the tv looks like:

This is my current wiring:

I am using a "Century Star - Super Family TV Games" as the basis for this project, I have not disabled the built-in games using the wire method on Ben's site, I have traced all of the connections multiple times and am certain that the points labelled "Power", "Video", "Audio", and "Ground" are correct.

Can this problem be fixed? Where have I gone wrong? Any help is appreciated...

Thanks in advance.

Did you fart whilst wiring it?

That could be the cause...

I think he's making a portable, and I've got one small question. Are you using the original power adaptor that came with it? Also, have you checked www.doomportables.tk to see if the pinouts on your NOAC match any of the ones shown?

Thanks for the quick replies!

@Turbo Tax 1.0: I'm making a 'home NES console' from a NOAC... So I have a NES that is small, easy to carry around to friend's houses, and has a whole heap of built-in games. Not strictly a 'portable' since it has no screen, but as I'm using the info found in this forum I posted it here.

@nos_silved: I am using the original power adaptor and have checked doomportables.tk for pinout diagrams. I found that mine matches the "Mega Joy (Pirate Famicom) Connections by Zenocha".

I thought the center hole on AV jacks was ground, not the other way around.

The audio signal comes from the junction of resistor 206 and capacitor 208. To make it work, connect the wire to the center tap of an RCA phono plug. Then, connect the outer edge of the RCA plug to the ground of the Atari board. To get ground, connect it to any spot on the Atari circuit board that touched the metal shield. (anywhere on the metal band that goes around the edge of the circuit board)
