So as my username would state I am a total noob to doing any homemade modification to systems. But seeing as how I want to play a lot of the systems I used to love in my youth on the go this site has intrigued me.
The system I would like to know about most right now though is the Dreamcast. Especially with the power this system has it would be truly sweet to have one for on the go play.
I have seen one users Dreamcast Trooper along with their Darth 64 model and must say am blown away by those.
So how easy/hard would it be for someone who does not have any engineering or electrical experience to build a homemade portable?

for somebody with no experience or technical know-how, it would be insanely hard.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say:
It's very easy.
Hook up a power supply and a screen, the rest is fine tuning.

It's wires in a box.

He's right, you know. That's all a portable really is. The real challenge lies in making it more compact and power-efficient, which makes it much more of a portable. Creating a pretty case is optional, but encouraged. Making a nice one makes the whole thing more attractive.
Either way, if you think you can tackle it, do your research well and be careful. Prove us all wrong and show that you can do it.

i, too, am an amateur modder. My first project involves the NES, probably the easiest mod, and i've run into more snags and complications than i thought. START OFF SLOW. A portable dreamcast seems like an awesome idea, but if you do simpler projects first, then work up to the daunting task of portablizing the dreamcast, the end result will be much cleaner and impressive.
if you do decide to go through with it, you came to the right place.

The first portable I did was a Dreamcast so it is definitely do-able. Just make sure you do your homework! Study everyone's WIP post, Family guys especially to figure out how to use the Pico Psu. You use a Quantum fighter pad for your controller because all of the controls are on their own boards. But just read around. Do google searches and search instructables for stuff to do with the Dreamcast. I did and there was one on a VGA mod that had the AV pinout. It is definitely do-able. Also case is what pretty much makes or breaks a portable. That is all most people care about is what it looks like. But make sure you set a lot of time aside to do the case as it will probably take you longer to make the case then it did to set up and get all the electronics working.

Yeah right now after about 5 hours of work ive done my RGB mod for my SNES, ive hooked up the batteries, and im waiting for my screen to come it but it works. I know most of my time though will be put into the case. and fyi this is my first project and i started off with no experience in soldering or circuitry just do a lot of research and never expect things to turn out.Twilight Wolf wrote:He's right, you know.
