Movie won't fit on DVD

Post by Edutainment »

How is it that you get the movie, special features and animated menus all on a commercial DVD, but when I try to burn long movies on DVDs, they don't fit? I'm using Nero, and for some reason, movies take up 4-5 times their actual size when I try to put them on a DVD.

Should I use a different program?

Everything you put on a video DVD is recompressed (well...decompressed) to an encrypted MPEG2 format. A DVD should be able to hold about 3 hours of footage.

This is 2 hours and 20 minutes. Nero says it's 6.74GB.

Retail DVD's can hold up to about 8GB. Single-layer (DVD5) discs, however can only hold up to 4.35GB. You need to either strip away some extras, or recompress to a smaller bitrate. You can use DVD Shrink for both.

I would recommend taking out the spanish etc. audio or anything that you don't need and compress it using DVD Shrink.

Just increase the compression until it fits.

You're probably not backing up with DVD Shrink, but if you do, get rid of the foreign languages and compress the special features as much as possible to give the main feature as much room as possible.

I also burn DVDs and I've had this same problem. Retail burnable DVDs come in either 4.7 gb or 8gb (not sure, but I think it's around 8). What you need to buy is 8 gb, or you can download DVD Shrink (best program ever) to decompress it. Then try it on your 4.7 gb DVD (assuming that is what you are using). If it doesn't work, then use 8 gb.

There are no features or anything. It's just a DivX movie, not direct rip.

you cant play divx in a dvd player, it has to be converted to mpeg 2. apparently nero is trying to use a ridiculously high bitrate.

there are 1000 guides on doing this manually, etc.

You should probably buy the movie instead of pirating and burning.
I'm the man, if you don't think so, you're wrong.

Try using a dvd encoder other than nero. Nero doesn't like to use normal bitrates.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

Glad to see you got this all worked out! :D

And on a different note, I've always wanted to let you know that your avatar is SO awesome! Saw the commercial on Ebay, so hilarious.
