PC issue, hoping for help

Post by x24 »

About two weeks ago I got a new (newer) video card from a friend of mine.. Geforce 6600 GT (AGP).. I installed it (as far as I can tell) properly.. installed the right drivers.. and then I started getting slowdown on my system..

before I installed this 3d card I had a
Sempron 2200+
512 MB ram
Radion 9250 (displaying at 1280x768)
20G,80G,40G Drives
DVD burner
PCI TV Capture Card
Windows XP SP2 (all updates DLed)
DX9.0c

This setup worked fine..

At first I didn't realize that my card has some sort of power port for a hard drive power cable.. It started having this issue where if I get more than one or two things going my system would make a deep beeping sound (from inside, not the speakers), stall (my mouse would still move and keyboard still reacted to pressing, such as the numlock) but I couldnt click anything and video would freeze for about 8 seconds then continue or my system would automatically restart without warning..

At this point I found out about needing the power cord.. I bought a splitter and installed it immediately.. It continued.. It wouldnt turn off during the problem much anymore tho.. occasionally it would shut itself off at night for no reason but it wasnt during the day as much

I thought maybe Windows was conflicting with the amount of video devices I had drivers installed for.. so I reinstalled XP from scratch (after a series of issues that I think pertained to my ancient 20GB HDD but thats a different situation, I think).. now it's doing the same thing:
-freezes with a bass-like beep for about 8 seconds
-sometimes restarts for no reason
-files become corrupt constantly.. often for files that I don't recognize
-games in full-screen will drop to about 1 FPS in 32bit mode (this is the original Unreal Tournament)
-drwatson has issues constantly.. keep having to ctrl+alt+del to restart that program or windows will hang
-when windows tries to load up it often freezes right before XP is found
-if not found and I try untill it finds it, chkdsk automatically runs and finds about 30 'errors inside [random] indexs', it fixes them restarts and then I have to play more of the 'hope it loads right' game again

the only other clue I get is that it says on startup (when showing the boot devices) that a cable is missing.. but its just labeled 'cable from (number) to (number)' is missing.. I'll see what I can do about getting the numbers I don't know if it will help..

does anything sound familiar.. Out of all the places I go online I figured you guys would be the best to ask..

Well dose the card have a spot that you are suppose to put a 4-6 pin connector from the power supply to it? Maybe it is not getting enough power. If you have it hooked up dose the power supply have enough watts to handle everything? Maybe you're hard drive is dieing? Get a new one if you don't need a lot of space try this one.

Also check to see if when you were installing the card you knocked loose some wire(s) just take them all off and put them back on?

If I did not help you, try asking here.

that might be it.. my power supply is 350W and I know my friend (that I got the card off of) has at least a 400..

thanks a lot.. I'll give that a try and if I see no difference I'll look into the site

again, thanks Dr.Killgood
