GC DVD drive mod question.
Is it possible to run a GC off a normal computer DVD drive? I'm looking to mod a GC with an ejecting outwards DVD drive.

Well as lik-sang.com no longer carries it, I checked ebay. From the looks the price isn't too extreme for what you're getting.Turbo Tax 1.0 wrote:i guess your right, how much do they cost now? i thought they may be cheaper since the wii is comingSkyone wrote:Because THOSE cost serious cashola.

From what I know about the GameCube the discs spin clockwise instead of counter. So to make a standard DVD-Rom read it you'll have to give it new firmware. That way the rom can check for both and when it find the disc is a GameCube game it will run the disc the right way.
I'm sorry to say that I have no idea how you'd go about doing that though. You can look online I'm sure there have been hundreds of people that have had this idea already. Maybe someone got their hands dirty and found a way to get the idea to work.

That's half right
The issue is not that it spins in a different direction -- it's that the drive reads the proprietary GameCube discs from the outside towards the inside.

Well then you have to have the DVD-Rom read that way, and as we know Sega did something very simalar to this in the Dreamcast.OlduvaiHand wrote:The issue is not that it spins in a different direction -- it's that the drive reads the proprietary GameCube discs from the outside towards the inside.

Well at the very least there is a way to get the iso so you could experiment with the idea. Checkout thebroken.org, and I believe it's in video 3 they tell you how to back up GameCube games.totokan wrote:yes, but the GD-ROM drive still reads CD-R's burnt normally, whereas I doubt you could burn a mini-dvd gamecube iso. Although, if you got played with the image, maybe...

This is just a crazy nub talking so if the idea is nubtacular, you know why.
Would it be possible to have the Eye from the GameCube possitioned above the drive tray, and the eye from the DVD-Rom possitioned below. That way if you put the disk in right side up the DVD-Rom will read it. Then if you put the disk in upside down the GameCube eye would read it.
It would take care of the spinning backwards issue (if that is the actually issue, from what i comprehend of the discussion thats one of the issues) and the gamecube eye would still read the way it normally does.
Again. Nub Talking.

Only difference period.Wikipedia.org wrote:Contrary to popular belief, GameCube discs are not physically read any differently from a standard DVD disc, but are encrypted with a key derived from the Burst Cutting Area, a 'bar code' unreadable by most DVD drives.
