sparks and smoke

Post by SpearMan74 »

I finally rigged a resistor, inductor, capacitor and dc-dc conver together. But, when i hook it up to a battery to check to see if it outputs 3.3, where i hooked it up to the battery starts to spark, and some smoke just starts to rise from the entire thing(don't know where.) Huh?
My computer isn't reconizing that my camera is hooked up, but what i did was i cut off a small piece of a board i bought, put a inductor on it, and a resistor, attached the resistor to the inductor, hooked one end of the inductor up to the input of my dcdc, and i put a capacitor on the negative, and output. I then put a 7.2 battery's posative into the other end of the inductor, and the same batterie's negative into the dc-dc's negative.
Maybe it's this; does a inductor have a posative and negative part?
I found a diagram here that told me to do all that, and someone said to do it exactly as it says. Bahumbug.

It sounds like you crossed some wires, positive and negative. Can you show us the diagram, and what regulator/converter are you using?

The avatar, it was up for 5 seconds then i got rid of it. You were just unlucky. I'm using the one everyone else gets for free at TI. The inductor i pulled off a gamecube screen i fried, capacitor 100 uf, resistor can't remember but i know its ok. And the diagram....I'm looking for it(i printed it out and can't find it on cpu)

Oh and i tried it again, the inductor gets hotter n hell even after just a second, the dc-dc gets hot, but not as much as the inductor.

i know it sounds simple but do you have the input going to the input on the TI dc converter?

Erm, ok... black is almost always ground, red is usually positive voltage. It even shows it in the diagram...

 *bangs head on desk* I read somewhere that the darker color is always posative. *bangs head on wall*

*bangs head on your head* I thought it was obvious, even without prior knowledge.

It seemed so to me, I guess that is my over-analytical mind.

I won't be able to post pics until tonight maybe, its still not registering....

just as an overview

1. Inductor doesn't have posative and negative sides?
2. Neither does a resistor?
3. Is a inductor supposed to get hotter n hell?
It's still smoking and sparking...............

I feel like a retard
