ok some updates:

i am now trading with eurddrue. just his ntsc 64 for my pal 64. his has a vdc chip so it will do rgb. this is great news for me as it was the most simple option that i had available to me.
so i will be putting an expansion pak into my unit laying flat by relocating it. i have noticed that the expansion pack allows some games to look really good on a large screen which is nice when i video out it to a large screen like my plasma and all the projectors at school that are in each room. so if the teacher slips out for a bit we can play super smash bros.
i am also getiing the pal pif chip from bacteria and am doing the transplant with it. so if all goes well this disaster has been averted. so i iz happy

so all that there is left to do in is buy the batteries, buy the blocks of plastic to cut the case out of with the cnc, design and cut the case out, do the modifications on the electronics and cram it all in.
easy....probably not :)

ok i just opened the expansion pak out of curiosity and it looks a tad tall to be able to put into the case. do people generally just slot it in and leave it in standing up?

i was just reading on some other forums that the only way to get vga is to get a scan doubler as the n64 only does 15hz where as vga screens take 30-something-hz. i could get a spacial cable that would allow me to do that but it costs $50
i have seen the bare scan doubler chips for $5 though. what would i have to do to get something like that to work?

Update, Update, UPDATE!!!!!

I have successfully traded my pal n64 board for a vdc-nus (rgb capable) NTSC one, all thanks to Eurddrue :D

so here is a recap of whats going on:

I have an rgb compatible n64
a Pal pif chip that i shall be transplanting into the n64, replacinf it's ntsc one
an expansion pak
a lovely glossy pal/ntsc 5" psone (Logic 3)
cr@p loads of carts
and a 6000mah camcorder battery on the way

Deal with battery:
My parents have kindly offered to pay for the rest of the unit as it is for school :D and because all the really expensive stuff is out of the way (screen). so they will be hooking me up with a 6000mah battery, i am still deciding whether i should do the LED mod or not, but that's to worry about later, and the plastic to cut the case out of.

Now i have to transplant to chips which requires me practicing beforehand (maybe 6-7 times) and design this case, that i plan to cut out with the school cnc mill. i will have to wait two and a half weeks as i am half a week into my 3 week end of term holidays and wont have access to it till then, which is fine with me.

Happy days

Switching chips isn't as hard as I thought it would be, I did it tonight  I already asked this, but...if you have any left over PAL chips...;)

it'll just be the pif if i don't break it. i have to get a new soldering iron as mine can't even melt solder anymore. my mum was at the shops and was kind enough to buy me one... but it was a soldering gun  :D it thanked her anyway but i will return it and get one of those nice cordless ones as i hate the fricking cables as they are so stiff and in the way.

i am busting to get started but alas, more roadblocks...

I know how you feel, I'm just waiting for my batteries in the mail.
Also, in Australia, how many more months of school do you have?
I can't wait to see this one. :)

well i got a hugh quality battery powered cordless one anyways as i believe the benifits far outweigh the fact that that they are weaker in some respects. it was funny because the iron was spread over two hooks and one had the price $80 above it and the other had $40 even though they were exactly the same. so i got it for $40 and they quickly removed the label after i told them. it left me with some extra moola so i bought a desoldering pump too. so i am very happy :D .

I live in NSW, i am in the first week of the 3 week holidays. we get 3 because i dont go to a government school. so they get 2 weeks instead. we also get 9 weeks at the end of the year instead of 6.

well i have been practising desoldering and resoldering chips from old boards and i think iam ready, too bad that the four aa batteries that came with the iron just bloody died =( they were like rubbish chinese 600mah one though anyways. i have been scouring the house for the rechargeable batteries but to no avail. i will buy some more and since i have two charging stations i will charge 4 while i use the other four and if i am not using the iron i will charge all of them.

HOOrahhhhh!!!! i did it! i did it! i did it!!!
i switched ma pif chip :P 8) 8)

Image
note: it is at lease 3 times tidier than the picture makes it look as it is all grainy .

also a picture of my soldering iron as it is the shizz.

Image

i have surveyed my thread and something didn't feel right.. it is barren in respect to pretty pictures. basically it aint colourful enough for me :D so here are some pictures of the other progess i haz been making this afternoon.

I decided to go ahead and put the heatsinks on my board. luckily for me i am a horder and used to built computers for friends so i have a great big stockpile of old computer gear, i don't have as much as i used to as they have been given to friends but i have enough guts to build probably 20 computers (not exaggerating) so i found the heat sinks i wanted in less than 5 mins. these are that things i pulled them off of:

Image
Image

8mb graphics card. heatsink is 6mm tall, 38mm across on both sides, plus its quite pretty  . the square in the middle is hollow too so it should keep cool enough. it says power 3d on it too so it also increases speed in the same manner as racing stripes.

Image
Image

next up is this board. it is about the stupidest thing ever concieved. it is called an ocz booster. it basically takes up a ram slot and tells you the voltage the other sticks are getting and allows you to increase or decrease that. it also is a pain in the ass to hook up as it needs like a gazillion things to be plugged into it. you should see how many connectors the wire it came with has on it too. it was aimed at overclockes but doesn't help them a bit because putting a stick of ram in that slot would offer better speed increases and cost 3 times less. but it had a lovely heatsink on it for me to pinch that is 6mm tall aswell.

finally, i uncovered a heatsink from an old 256mb graphics card that i had bought for $10 a while back. it was so cheap because it always overheated and had no fan, just this heatsink:

Image

which i promptly replaced with this heatsink and fan from two old pentium IIIs by super glueing and hotgluing to the max!:

Image

and yes.. it takes up the two pci slots next to it

Image

i took the old crappy heatsink and cut off 3 of the furthest segments on each side as they are much smaller and thinner as they were raised above the board my dremel, killing one of my cutting wheels

Image
this picture is more evidence of this cameras inability to take pictures of things close to it

then i stuck them all onto the board using superglue, remebering to put the thermal paste on beforehand. I think it looks quite snazzy

Image
Image

next thing to do is get rgb off the vdc-nus chip and give it a whirl with my screen. i can't wait :D it will look sweet as hell if all goes to plan.
