Not a bad idea. You'd be kind of hard pressed to be able to use the tile of Ben's book. Though even if you couldn't if you got he guides well written and layed out I don't see why the publishers wouldn't consider it.

You don't need to get permission from Ben to use that name (though you might because he wrote the book), you need to get permission from ExtremeTech to use the "Hacking" prefix. Maybe Ben could do a foreword or something to say he didn't have enough time to write a second book, but some generous people from the website wrote it for him.

Ok, first of all, sorry for bringing this back, but I have information!

For Ben's next book (or we could all write it and post it here), it should be as follows!

Part I: So you want to make MORE portable video game systems?
Chapter 1: Choosing a Game Console to Make Portable
Chapter 2: Knowing your Tools
Chapter 3: Learning Basic Electronics for Portables
Chapter 4: Hacking Portable Screens
Chapter 5: Using Vacuum Forming Equipment

Part II: Making More Portable Game Consoles
Chapter 6: Making Your Nintendo 64 Portable
Chapter 7: Making a Portable N64 by Hand
Chapter 8: Making a Portable N64 case using Vacuum Forming
Chapter 9: Making Your Sega Genesis on a Chip Portable
Chapter 10: Making a Portable GOAC by Hand
Chapter 11: Making a Portable GOAC using a Vacuum Former
Chapter 12: Making Your Nintendo GameCube Portable
Chapter 13: Making a Portable GameCube by Hand
Chapter 14: Making a Portable GameCube using a Vacuum Former
Chapter 15: Making Your Sega Dreamcast Portable
Chapter 16: Making a Portable Dreamcast by Hand
Chapter 17: Making a Portable Dreamcast using a Vacuum Former

Well, whaddya think?

Some of them would be very advanced (GameCube notably), but some of them would be very simple (Ben's already done a GOAC and I'm working on an N64 that would fit nicely with the hand-built portables (it will be made using the same methods Ben used in the first book). Dreamcast would be kind of tricky, but not that bad, especially because it isn't as complex as the GameCube inside. I kinda scraped the bottom of the bucket with this one, there aren't many good consoles left to make portable (well, the other Sega ones, but a book of all Sega consoles?).

Serioulsy, if ben makes another, he should have a mini section about the forum and some of its members (how cool would that be during a book report presentation to say "In Hacking Videogame Consoles 2, Ben Heckendorn described ME as some obnoxious hip gear seller who got a bad mark for the report regarding my first book") and get a 90 :-P

Works for me, but we need to wait until all of the portables are designed, and no using pre-made cases either, project boxes are off limits too. Everything gets made from scratch, or it's a disgrace to Ben's first book.

Well about using Vacuum forming, the problem with that is if Ben, or original creator, wants to sell cases to the projects in the books CNC is more efficient and uniform, not to rain on anybodies parade but that is the way it would most likely go. :?
Plus: it would be hard to mimic the exact mold used if they wanted to make it themselves.
