beautiful, it looks like you made a very smooth transition from case to controller pieces.

after you are done I would really suggest some krylon clearcoat it makes the paint much more durable and I really wish I had used it on all of my portables instead of just the mkIII

I couldn't find any at ace hardware, but then again, I was a bit rushed... I'll probably check again soon, like when I finish painting it white...

and ghosstt, I have four sweat bands, 2 black zelda ones, one pac man one, and a NES controller one  I know, I'm a Nintendo fan boy :D

Bahhhh! (Waluigi Style). I wanted it painted red!

Well it still looks awesome. And i have some of those sweatbands too. One of old school Donkey Kong. One of a Power Up Mushroom, and one of Link holding up the Triforce. :D

Looking excellent so far, you must be proud of your case.

I too am a Nintendo fan! I have no interest in Playstation (apart from their screens of course!), or Xbox (a PC is far better at playing games, although I haven't played any PC games since starting my mod!).

I have an evil PS2, but thats because my brother got it, and I only use it for DDR, and guitar hero, until it comes out on the Wii :P

small update, I started drawing ore "cut out" lines on the back of the case. it is about tall enough to hold a cartridge and it will include the controller ports on the back.I'd show a pic, but my lines are sucky, so I'm using a ruler that is "bendable" (genius) to get all the curves straight.

Good idea to use a "bendy" ruler.

I am using the full-sized controller, so can't get more than about 3/4 of my cart inside the system. I could have trimmed an inch off the controller, but wasn't worth it as the issue I had was the sheer amount of wiring on my project involved. I am interested to see what goes where in your portable - please give pics of progress as you install board parts into the construction. I am interested to see how you construct yours and where everything fits..

Looking great so far. The bondo job looks pretty smooth. I'm glad you're putting this much effort into it, it'll pay off!

One thing you can do next time when making the forming template is to draw half the design on paper, lay it over another sheet, and re-trace it. Then you'll have a mirror image. The case looks a good bit off-center.

Any idea how thick the end result will be?

Yes, not only the centre thickness, but the thickness of the case you would be holding the system - it needs to be the distance ideally between the gap of your thumb and forefinger bases - if it is much thicker than that, it will be hard to hold comfortably, and for any length of time, and to keep your fingers and thumb from moving about. (that is why I ended up with needing 85mm clearance on each side - I could have made it just over 55mm otherwise (to clear the speakers) and made the case I need 6cm less wide; but then the unit would be harder to hold. Trade-off.

marshallh - yes, as you say, it is a little "off centre", however I don't think it is an issue as it is only a bit off and looks symetrical enough - the aspect of "off-centre" which may be less ideal is that the screen hole looks like it isn't completely straight to the top of the case. Anyway, there is always a built-in tolerance when making things by hand and not machined. When playing a game, it may well not be noticeable anyway.

Ultimately, the case on this project is gorgeous; far better than many cases people make, and the end result could potentially look near commercial quality, which is the ultimate aim of these projects. You either strive for "commercial quality" (like this one) or "beautifully made but home made" (like mine), or "acceptable" or "it's only for me and it will do" or "bodged/hacked, in a rush".

Looking nice so far.

Marshall:
I hate how its off center, but my friends dad was the one who cut it, and he had to use a jig saw over a band saw... the design I did a similar method, where I measured the design, then folded it exactly in half, then cut about a millimeter away because I made it a tiny bit big, but the end result was symmetrical. I also love the bondo job, I've put on at least 20 coats of bondo, and they make a smooth transition between the case and the controller pieces. after a careful measured with said bendy ruler, and it is 2.1 inches thick! pretty thin, if I do say myself...

Bacteria:
I believe my looks like commercial quality, but isn't an assembly line thing. (I know marshal made jeffslot an L64, but that was the last one he built :P ) The only thing that I would be doing is making a case for SS because he needs a good case, vac formed shell, as all of his other ones were case mods... (but that is the last S64 case I make... )

I know the awesomeness of it, I've been staring at it all week :D

On a different thread you mentioned:
Master of Portables wrote:I just don't have the funds, I can't even buy a PSOne screen at the moment :( .
I take it then that your project is static for quite a while and you are unable to progress more than completing the case, which you have done? When do you think you will be able to complete this portable?

Come on! I'm bidding on a PSOne screen right now! In the past hour it got from $15 to $20... but I might be able to snipe it just in time :D . And there is still the back to be done, but that won't really take a long time, the majority of it will be cutting, sanding, and painting... (wait, what thread did you get that quote from, I can't remember right now...) and of course, there is some small wiring such as RBG, cart slot relocation, etc. Theres a lot to be done!

You still didn't answer his question. When will the freaking portable be done?
