Anyway, besides the Hitchhikers Trilogy (which I also recommend), I suggest the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by Tolkien, The Saga of Seven Suns series by Kevin J. Anderson (he's currently writing book five, so it's a very recent thing), anything by Asimov, Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albolm (sp?), and that's about it offhand, get back to me when you're done. :P

Michael Crichton is a pretty good author, though his endings usually leave a bit to be desired. I'd suggest Jurassic Park, Prey, and Andromeda Strain. All of his books are very science-oriented, so I suppose if you're not into that, then you'll probably dislike his books.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is also a good book, along with its companion novel Ender's Shadow.

I was hoping for less science oriented books. Although I am thinking about picking up hitchhikers guide.

If you want HHG, just get 'The Ultimate Hitchikers guide to the galaxy'. It has all 5 books, plus the mini one. I read it all in a week and have to return it by dec. 27.
Shhh! I'm not officially back yet.

that's the one I have...the covers are gone and it's gotten milk spilled on it (a while ago), but it's still readable!!
Without games my life would have no meaning.
Well, I guess it would, but it would be a lot less fun!!!!!!!

I think I'll post this again just for the hell of it, because its just so damned good, and because its the central point of Stephen King's career, and because it was inspired by The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.

The Dark Tower series!
-The Gunslinger
-The Drawing of the Three
-The Wastelands
-Wizard and Glass
-The Wolves of Calla
-Song of Susannah
-The Dark Tower

I'm not joking when I say this, its the epitome of his work, and probably the best series I've ever read, in terms of interconnecting plot lines and stuff. if anything, read the first 3, the fourth is kind of boring with the romance theme. I have yet to read the final 3, but of what I've heard they makes things so much better, I'm just waiting for them to come to mass-market paperback.

Yes, we all marvel at your excellent use of precise vocabulary :P

I'd have to say that anything by Larry Niven is typically superior. I would recommend "Destiny's Road" and "Flatlander" (collection of superb short stories) in particular.

Sean McMullen's "Souls in the Great Machine" is an extraordinary work of post-apocolyptic sci-fi, and it takes place in Australia! :D It is the first of three books, two of which I've read and enjoyed quite a bit.

"Red Thunder" by....some guy, is an excellent sci-fi that takes place in the very near future. A bumbling, mentally retarded genius invents a device, allowing a burnt-out astronaut and a bunch of teenagers to effectively change the world as we know it. Very good read, and relatively down to earth.

Oh, you wanted something less sciency? Well.....ummm...

hmm...

Nope, nothing here :P

I barely ever open a novel--and actualy finish it. Last real book I read was "The Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown. Pretty interesting book mind you... Most of it being complete fairytale, still a good read though.
