Ebay is always having a sale !!
You don't always need to be looking for a portable TV or PSOne screen. There are other things out there that have some large LCD screens that would suffice and can be gathered fairly cheap.
How about one of those portable DVD players with a 5" screen that is broken (no power). You can probably get one off ebay for under $40. I got a 7" for about that price, but the only problem is that it did work!! I can't bear to tear the thing apart now. I'm currently watching "Pump up the Volume" on it now (Christian Slater's best work).
But my favorite is something else - I'm not going to let you guys in on it yet because I don't want a bunch of you driving up the prices because of unknowingly bidding against each other. I want to buy a few more first. I will tell you that they are about 6" screens with great resolution, nice stereo speakers, take 8.5 volts, and can be had for about $35-$40 after shipping. I'm playing one now hooked up to my SuperJoy! Awesome. Also they come with some nice stuff to recycle off the boards - RCA Jacks, LEDs, tactile buttons, even an AC convertor (120-240vAC to 12vDC - ever wanted to plug your portable directly into the wall socket?).
Be creative - do a search for "TFT LCD" and see what you come up with. Look for things that have an LCD as part of the thing, but not the primary piece. Look for broken stuff (like no power) that you can get cheap. Most of the time issues with no power can be fixed easily (replace fuse, bypass something) or they have nothing to do with the LCD screen itself. Find a portable DVD player that is broken - the DVD may not work, but the LCD screen might - a great value if you can get it cheaply.

I haven't tried supplying less voltage. The system itself takes 12V input, but the LCD appears to take just 8.5V. There is some sort of voltage regulator on the LCDs controller board - I measure approx 8.5 volts off each side of it. I haven't tried disconnecting the LCD and its board from the rest of the system yet, though. When I do, I will try less voltage to see what it will do. I'll probably be working on that this week.
For broken PSOne screens I only looked once but they seem to be in the area of less then $10. As the seller sees it unless you know (or have a good idea of) what your doing the item is worthless.
As for batteries I (like others) wouldnt suggest using alkaline batteries. They dont have the capasity to power a high draw eletroic device. I'd say look into the RadioShack R/C batteries, I used a Ni-Cd battery for a while and just tested running the PSOne off it.
