If I sent you one of the Thinkpads with a fuse would you be able to repair the power circuit yourself? (everything else is good, incl battery and AC adaptor, save for the missing HD)

No, unless I had a soldering iron, but I would like to see pictures.
Ever heard the saying "Half full, or half empty?"
Well, If you measure the cup, and put a line in the middle, and fill to the line, it's half full, but If you fill it to the top, and drink to the line it's half empty!

Here are the requested pics of the laptop.

This is the laptop that I will be sending as the last time I put a (charged) battery into it it powered up.
I have removed the harddrive since.

I'll take pics of the adaptor if required.

I'll trade it for an Intellivision. ^ ' ' ^

Otherwise I'll take $120 (minimum parts value if I could tollerate e-Bay.)

thinkwiki.org: R52

I probabally won't trade for much else since I have boxes of electonics, and piles of computers I am trying to dispose of responsibly.

I it is only fair that I warn you that I do not know if it is the fuse that failed,
or if it is actually some other component that blew,
or what size fuse is correct for this model.

I do know that it does not charge a battery or power up in any decernable fashon from the power-jack.
I do know that with a charged battery (from another Thinkpad) and boot disc it will boot up normally.
I do know that the optional memory upgrade to 1 GB (2x512K dual channel) is installed.
I do not know what other optional upgrades were installed.
I do know that the previous owner used it both for his work machine and to play WOW.

Edit: shoot, I did some checking up, I do not have the correct adaptor for this model. The R52 takes 16V, 90W - still explains why it did not work with the OEM replacement after having choked on 19V.

:| Sorry, to have wasted your time.
 This one is the closest to 100% I currently have availble in the date range specified. The others require replacement of chips.

:?: Do you want me to poll my contacts for another laptop in better condition?

I don't know of any school that requires 13 year olds to provide their own laptop. I'm pretty sure you mean "want" it for school.

Would your school be receptive to having their equipment refurbished?

I'm willing to bet that those machines have not had a clean install (and driver update) since they were installed, about the time you were born.

To answer your question, I have the Sony Vaio for parts. Depending on how much you're looking to spend, but just keep in mind the LCD itself usually goes for close to $100 on eBay.
Is sony on meth? Thats too expencive, but how much for the HDD, and how many GigaBites is it? Is it a terrabite?
No, Sony is just currently dealing with a large scale major catastrophe that has actually begun to cripple them, as well as Toyota and a few other companies that are based in Japan.

There are no TB for laptops from back then, the idea wasn't even mainstream until two years ago, and they still don't come stock in laptops.
