Yes, you can get the power via the power points. it all comes from the same place. just make sure your wiring is right to handle the extra draw from the screen.

Got started on my 360 laptop proper. I broke down the 360 to the motherboard.

Took the CPU heatsink off and cleaned the thermal compound off. Clean as a whistle.



I never really liked the "cooling enhancements" that were performed in other laptops so I decided to stick with the original heasink. But I chopped about half an inch off. I marked a line all the way around and did it with a hacksaw. Then went across the top with a file. IT turned out really clean. I'm very happy with it. I plan to have a fan pushing cold air down onto it.



I then remounted it with the original Xclamps. It's no taller than the GPU heatsink.

I then tested it to make sure I didn't cause a RROD. No RROD. IT STILL WORKS!!! YAY!!!



And finally for the night, some desoldering. I was having problems with this on a test board. But it actually went fairly smoothly on this board. I only did the front USB ports. I have really clean pads to solder my case mount USB ports to now. I figured I'd end on a victory.



The only further desoldering I plan to do is the HDD connector and the Front Panel connector.

My power supply should be here tomorrow so I'll probably do the mod to make it run from that power supply. I plan on running the monitor off it to, if I somone could help me determine where to split the inverter/power board and where to provide it 12v and 5v. I'm using the Gateway 1775w

I didn't like the way the Xclamp was holding the CPU Heatsink on. It wasn't tight, and it would wiggle on the x and y axis if I tried to move it. So I applied the RROD fix. Now it doesn't wiggle at all, and I'm much more confident it's making good contact with the CPU die.

Well, did a bit of desoldering. I managed to screw up removing the HDD connector. So using that connector to make the drive removable isn't an option. No biggie, I'll just hardwire in the drive anyway. Means less case planning and more room I have since I can strip it to just the bare drive.

I also managed to screw up the connector for the front panel. So I'm can't use that connector to extend the cables to reposition the board. No biggie, I'll just have to hardwire it the hard way.



Here's a pic, the length of the wires isn't final. It was more of a test just to make sure the system still worked to see if I should just stop the project right now. System still works, so I'm pushing on.

I also took apart the monitor. Here are pics of the power/inverter and control boards. Anyone know where I should split the power/inverter? Also, I plan on leaving out the power section all together.

I see the header between the power board and control board is labeled so I know where to route the 12v and 5v on that. But I also need to provide those to the inverter section and I don't know where.

It looks like it's clearly divided between the high voltage section, and low voltage. Looks like I could literally split it right on the massive white line. Seems like on the top side of the white line, it's where it's 12v. Then the top half, I can cut in half vertically. Looks like the left side is all the hardware to get a 5v. On the left side there's a header that goes to the control board. I can trace everything except for 5v over to the right side which looks like it's for the inverter. The inverter would only run on 12v right?
