unfortunately, that little trick doesn't work in this situation. You assume people are going to use all the correct letters AND make sure the first and last letters of the word are kept in their spots.

Well, my theory is the someone who writes definitely is not mistyping the word but actually misspelling it. In other words the person is unsure deducts from the pronunciation that the word is probably spelled definitely. The difference is that in one case the person would mistype the word because of sloppy fingers, in the other case they would intentionally spell it in a certain way. The difference is that in most cases when you mistype a word it's pretty clear that the word is mistyped, as the mistype version doesn't make sense. For this reason I'm against filtering something filtering like t e h as there's no confusion as to whether that is the correct spelling or not. And there are "legitimate" aesthetic reasons why on might want to spell them that way. For example, Rekarp had the statement "T e h economiez broked my moniez" or something to that effect up until recently.

Something like a l o t or definitely on the other hand will be picked up by people who will assume it's the correct spelling, which is why it makes sense to filter those misspellings.

Added "definately" = "definitely", since it seems to be the most common.

While the others are not as common as 'efinately, they are not exactly uncommon either. Some statistics:

definitely 2204 (67% of all occurences)
d efinately 466 (15% of all occurences) (47% of misspellings)

at least in my book, misspellings are not nearly enough of a problem to warrant so much effort going into word filters.also as far as swearing goes if people wana swear they can always write %&%* .

I'm surprised that 2/3 of the time, it was spelled correctly. Maybe the wrong spellings just jump out that much more.
