Alright I'm new here and have absolutely NO experience with portables whatsoever, but even I can tell you're getting ahead of yourself. One thing I'd like to point out is that from reading all the information on this forum, a portable is not as simple as taking a random case, throwing everything in there, plugging in a battery, screen, and done. You gotta actually put work into it, do some soldering, etc. Plus, as a 13 year old, where are you getting all the money?

I'm 15 (almost 16), and I've been able to get the money on my own for a while.

True, but 14+ you can get a minimum wage job, and younger than that you can only do a paper route or get allowance for doing chores. And for what he plans to do, it'll take him forever to get that kinda money.

Most portables are, by their nature, more fragile than their original systems; it can't be helped. The most experienced modders are careful to make sure their system is as durable as possible, but even then, things break. What are you going to do, blame the buyer for being too rough with it? And what guarantee does the buyer have (your conviction nonwithstanding)?

Well, let me help with that: if it were so easy, more people would do it. Unless you are some sort of electronics prodigy, starting with an unnecessarily difficult project is madness. You will be discouraged from trying again.

And the business about an "nes/commodore 64/atari 2600/intelvision portable (ALL in one medium handheld case)" is ludicrous. It would be stupidly difficult to make and would rival a business laser printer in size.

Listen to the forum members - they have more experience than you and will help you if you aren't a jerk about it.

well i am an electronics prodigy

nes/commodore 64/atari 2600/intelvision portable (ALL in one medium handheld case) will be pretty small THEY'RE SOAC (each is about the size of a joystick)

thank you for your tips and stuff you're a very big help

EDIT: MAYBE my medium is your large?

Now im thinking about the nes/commodore 64/atari 2600/intelvision portable HOW THE HELL can i get a keyboard that small?

guess i'll have to like take a keyboard apart take the guts and redo the buttons (but like blackberry size)

I know i trying to make imposible things here SO STOP TELLING ME (but i can't see why i could not make a ps1/nes/genesis portable , HUMANS CAN DO ANYTHING!!!! (i mean did you see the macbook air , if they can do that why can't i make a bulky nes/commodore 64/atari 2600/intelvision portable ? muahaha))

*face palm*

Everyone, I think we've made our point. So, in closing: Good luck. You will need it.

Last but not least, this is the trading post, and you aren't selling anything anyone wants to buy, or have commissioned from you. This definitly belongs somewhere else, but I'm not sure where.

"Wishful Thinking" perhaps, or "Crash and Burn WIP." Yeah, I vote that.

I also wish you good luck and will await updates on this project with bated breath.

You walk the fine line between "Newb with no experience that listens", "N00B with no experience that ignores us" , and "N00B with no experience that insults us".

Because of this, I am unsure what to make of you. If you were simply any of the above, I would have a reply...

Also, SS and other people who are not posers in the scene know what they are talking about, but I have something to add:

I will pretend, for the sake of argument, that you are truly are an "electronics prodigy", and you really can build this thing, albeit at an enormous cost. I do not think you will be able to sell it, plain and simple. Why?

Look, the reason these things sell is that they are a huge nich product. Other than a few members here who will buy these for spare change, portables get sold to the most hardcore enthusiasts around. Do you think the people buying Ben's Atari portables are just looking for a game console? No, they are ultra-hardcore Atari fans with money ($500-1000 worth) to burn on reliving their childhood through a new lense. Same with Genesis portables, NES portables, and C64 portables that pop up from time to time, sometimes on ebay: Only people who are THE most hardcore fans of the system, AND have money to burn, will buy it. And if they DO buy it, they want it to look nice, not like a hack job (No offense, but making good cases is what separates the $200 portables that LOSE money, and the $600-800 portables. See Rekarp.)

Why am I ranting on and on about this? Here is why: You will spend a LOT of extra money to build this thing, IF you can pull it off, as compared to a single system portable. In addition, it will take a LOT more time.

Now, how possible is it the someone happens to be a super hardcore C64/NES/Gen/Atari fan? It is not! These people are usually looking for one system. If they can buy a good looking, medium sized, super-multi-retro system for $400, say, and an equally good looking NES portable (or whatever retro console they know, love, and collect games for) for $250, they will probably choose the single system. Or, more likely, you have your "Medium sized" portable with all those systems, and a teeny tiny single system with more battery life, they will choose that one!

The point is, there is just no market for these. If somebody wanted a ton of systems in one, I can garuntee they will be looking at an emulation device. If they want an authentic, console style experiance for that console they grew up with, spent hundreds of dollars on, and kept games aroud for 20 year for, they will not be interested in covering your additional costs.

That said, I will not bother on all the points of why you cannot even make it, since we have no clue where you really stand in terms of skills. All i can say is good luck, but do not expect to make money on this. Not even break even. Expect to LOSE a big chunk of change.

And then he said, TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT!

That was a very thorough, even-handed analysis of your plan. You would do well to consider Palmer's points - the frog knows what he is talking about.
