A best / favourite system is dictated by either its cost (sorry NeoGeo) game quality and replay value or by its portabalizing abilities. For example, although the modern generation of consoles are not yet retro, in a couple of years they will be - aren't easy to portablize and you end up with a heavy system, a big system and restrictive. In comparision, the old retro systems are generally easy to portablize, given sizes, the likes of the SNES and N64 and PSone are favourites as they aren't hard to work with and the boards are small.
In regards to the best retro system in gaming, that is very subjective. Each system has a range of appalling games, mediocre titles, ones on each platform made and some true classics. A true classic game is not necessarily one that gets the most votes, but a true gem with such replay value that you still come back to it year on year with enthusiasm. For me therefore, my order from top to bottom would be: MAME (Galaga, etc - retro but only via emulators), N64 (mostly thanks to Super Mario 64 and Pokemon Puzzle League), SNES (Tetris Attack, Yoshi Island), PSone, MegaDrive (Psycho Pinball), NeoGeo (Neo Turf Masters - I have to play via emulator though, system and game too expensive), NES (Spot), Amstrad GX4000 (Navy Seals).
Many more quality games of course, these ones came to mind immediately. There are quite a lot of titles which you play for a long time and love but probably won't play again though (Donkey Kong 64, Banjo, etc) - no the "one more go" games which are timeless.

I don't think portabilizability is a real criteria for being a good game system.bacteria wrote:A best / favourite system is dictated by either its cost (sorry NeoGeo) game quality and replay value or by its portabalizing abilities. Anyway, SNES. Good games, nice 2D graphics.

My favorite retro system is the Sega Saturn, as I've mentioned once or twice before elsewhere. It's the only retro system I've ever owned where I constantly found new games that struck my interest, and not one of them disappointed me. Plus I have some sort of odd fascination with failed consoles (I really only bought a Genesis to get a Sega CD and 32X, for example).
ValiantVenality, it's good to see another Saturn fan! If you liked "Virtua Fighter," I bet you'll love "Virtua Fighter 2." And if you liked "Daytona USA," you should try "Sega Rally Championship." One of the best racers available for the Saturn.
You should also try "Clockwork Knight" (a fun and addictive platformer), "Tomb Raider" (superior to the PlayStation version, in my humble opinion, though if you already own it it's rather pointless to have two copies), and, of course, "NiGHTS Into Dreams." Just make sure you get a 3D control pad for that one; playing with a standard Saturn controller just isn't the same. Plus it makes your thumb hurt like crazy.
The Dreamcast is great as well, but I don't quite consider it a "retro" system. It's technically the same generation as the PS2 and GameCube, and we know those aren't considered retro yet.

Console? Gamecube, N64 or Snes. I basically grew up with that, I went next door almost everyday to play Megaman X, Super Mario World, Zombies Ate my Neighbors or Super Smash Bros. I wish I was smarter back then, that damn fat kid never let me play as Link! The first console I actually owned was a gamecube, first 2 games being Wave Race, and Luigi's mansion. "Santa" didn't know Luigi's mansion wasn't two player.
#rd game I got was SSBM. Oh, by the way, My eight year old smash bros melee disc broke 2 days ago. It was in my coat pocket(as I have a GCp, and seem to enjoy multiple games at once), and it wouldn't read later, and then it boke in half. LIKE FREAKING PAPER! I attribute the weakness to having been used almost non-stop since 2001(or 02, I don't remember). Smash is my probably my favorite game, on the same Level as LoZ: LA.
Handheld? Gameboy Color. First video game device I ever owned. Favorite game of all time of mine on there was Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. That game changed my life. And as such I have followed the series. And played as link in every smash since. Ain't no fat kid gonna tell me not to play as Link, I will beat the tar out his ears on the spot. I wish I had a hookshot.
And that is the history of how ShockSlayer's gaming life began.

I envy you, MARIOPARTY555333. I want a Japanese Saturn! A grey one with blue buttons, specifically. They look so much cooler than the American ones.
I have a much larger Saturn collection than of any other console I own:

Hmm, the one with the best childhood memories: n64. I distinctly remember playing mario 64 and legend of Zelda all the way up to each individual boss battle, then getting scared and letting my younger brother beat him. I was scared rear-endless when i faced That one bongo dude in LoZ. Bowzer was pretty scary too!
The one we've had the longest: the vcr style NES. For their anniversary before i was born, my mom got my dad a rolex. He already had a digital watch, so he returned it for cash
and got a nes with river city ransom, contra, and all 4 Mario games (1,2,3,that puzzle one). They spent hours on that. When that died, they bought a topright version that's been chugging ever since. I think they should have marriage counseling with Dr. Mario.
