Don't think anyone could be disappointed with a powershot. I know they can take some really high-res close-ups. If you can get it focused. We had a picture once of those red mites you find on bricks and sidewalks and such, and you could make out (the mite in focus) its legs and antennae. This thing was also not over 4 megapixels. Get a good close-up in focus, and you could probably make out identifying features, so that later when you're in your backyard you can find your buddy amongst his friends.

My father uses a sony cyber-shot DSC-H9, and it's a neat little camera. It costs about 200€ used
