FC Game Console/Hip Gear wiring question (with a pic)

Post by Tendoman »

Okay,

Here is an image of my current wiring of a FC Game Console to a Hip Gear Screen.

Image

The system works fine on it's own, however when I turn on the screen it sucks the power away from the system turning it off and there is no image on the screen. Also I have an obnoxious hum coming from the speakers. I'm sure none of that is good, however I'm not sure how to fix this. Could it be a problem with my soldering or just wired it wrong all together and fried the screen? Oh yeah I'm assuming people know details about the screen.
Think.

Alright here's the latest developments:

- Screen works, only as an input device (tested it on DV cam)
- Screen only works when there is a headphone plugged into it, but there is still an obnoxious hum
- Turning on game system scrambles video
- Still no audio from speakers

Does anyone have an idea of what's going on here before I end up frying something?
Think.

The speakers are humming because you've got a bad ground somewhere.

I'd start by checking your grounds and see if their all solid. After that, if they're common voltage (long shot), connect ALL the grounds.

Grounded components are goooood.

I have the same problem with voltage that goes to the system or the screen, but no one answers me

Alright here's another update, *sigh* okay I could not figure out what was wrong with it so I just powered it with some batteries and it worked fine. For whatever reason it absolutely HAS to run off batteries. I was originally using the wall outlet in an attempt to save battery power while working out all of the bugs.

Another interesting problem I encountered is that one of the speakers gets unbelievably hot. I checked to see if there was a short or something but there was nothing. Is it just that I'm using too much juice? I have 8 AA's totalling 12V (give or take a decimal number.) The outlet states 9V, but again I'd like to fix the problem before I fry something.

have you tried modifying the hipgear screen to run on less than 8V?
By desoldering the regulator and jumping it's i/o you can use around 5V even.

yea, i reached that conclusion too... i was intially running off a variable AC to DC wall adapter b/c i didn't want too test using just batteries.. i'd go through sooo many AAs if i went that route and i got the same hum from the audio out, and weird scan lines on the display. however, when hooked up to batteries.. it wall went away. i guess not all wall adapters actually output that clean of a DC signal. my "suggestion" is that its safe to run off the ac/dc wall adapter but just run it at enough voltage that the components will consume.
