hacking together a tablet pc

Do you have a technical question that doesn't really fit a specific console? Want some general info on electronics, hacking, making cookies, etc? Here's the place to ask! Go nuts.

hacking together a tablet pc

Post by luddite »

Hey guys,

I've become obsessed, again, with constructing my own tablet. I say again...really it's sort of a morph of a previous idea. I bought an old laptop to use as a firewall, which failed, so I gutted it. Seemed like it would have plenty of room to put new parts in, so I looked into buying a beagleboard or gumstix mobo and going from there. That idea sort of fizzled.

Anyway, I've been looking around these forums, and hackaday as well, for inspiration and guidance. I've come to the point where I think I need advice/opinions before I can move forward. So let's break this into it's parts:

1) Do any of you have experience with any of the following: Beagleboards, gumstix overos, or via epias? I realize most here are game system modders, but I thought mebbe some of you are also into hacking other things as well :)

2) Opinions: Is it better to buy a monitor and use it's included DVI connection as a screen or buy an lcd panel and drive it through LVDS or similar standard? I suspect, reading these forums, general consensus will be the monitor. As a third option I was thinking about getting an Aluratek Cinepal. These sell for something like $140 on B&H, and as a bonus include battery and other electronic goodies that may be useful for the project.

3) Cases: I really don't want to slap this into some square generic project box. It would work, but I think it would be counter productive to the purpose of a tablet. So it looks like I'll have to make a case. I've looked into vacuum-forming and plastic molding, both of which seem most likely for me. I like the idea of casting aluminum, but that requires a lot of other stuff I don't have, not the least of which is cash monies :) But also a forge, molds, molding sand, room to house all that stuff....Some other time perhaps.

Thanks for any help folks. If you think there are other sites that might be better suited for this kind of thing lemme know. I just thought you guys seemed like the right kind of fit and a good place to start.

How big a screen do you want, and what kind of processing power do you need?

A good starting point for a "real" PC would be a netbook with an aftermarket touch screen kit. I know they made them for the EEE 900 series, not sure about others. You can remove the keyboard and its trim, flip the screen around, and build a custom case to go over the top.

You could get a MID if you want something even smaller. These kind of devices are sort of halfway between a netbook and a smartphone. For example, there's a growing community based around hacking the ClarionMiND. It was originally designed to be a GPS, but it uses Intel's 800 mhz Atom / GMA 500 MID platform and is capable of running Windows XP. However, to be such a small device they had to make some sacrifices in the hardware department: the internal storage is only 4 gigs (though it has a MicroSD slot and a USB port) and the 5" screen is 800x480. However it is cheap, less than $150 shipped, and should be capable of running console emulators and some older PC games.

I'm looking for something in the 9-10 inch range. Yeah, I've seen the clarionmind mentioned about. I'm not sure it will be big enough for what I would like. Reworking an Asus netbook is an interesting idea though. Mostly what I would need the tablet to do is browse the web and play flash. The iPad kind of has the right idea, but I'm not a big fan of apple anymore; also it doesn't play flash so that's kind of a no go. The size is about right however.

The Mind sounds like an interesting device though...hmmm....

The black ones are out of stock on Amazon but they still have white ones for the same price:

And here's the manufacturer's dealer locator:

*facepalm* That wouldn't sting my ego as much if it had been some lesser known pc/electronics website...but amazon *shakes head*. Funny how that didn't list up on a google shopping search...Anyway, thanks for the clarification. I watched a video on installing XP onto one of these guys. It looked like there was some issue of setting the screen resolution that resulted in the desktop basically displaying off-center. Not bad though, certainly still useable.

...I still kind of feel like cobbling one together. Is that silly of me?
