QuickSkope's SNESp WorkLog: Unamed (taking Options)

Post by QuickSkope »

Ok, So I bought all my crap and its shipping in the mail, And I found out today when I got my SNES mini, that the *plinking* thing doesnt turn on without a game, so I ordered SMW from ebay and it should be here soon. The batteries and screen are coming, Im trying to work something our with the soldering Iron.

So Il be posting my progress here.

Im not really sure about what case to use, I was thinking ZN-40, but I see all the cases are ZN-40, So I might try my luck at vacume forming or an AG-85
.
I want to take out the screws, but whenever I heat the plastic of a Bic Pen, it turns to Flux. Any help?

Good luck with your portable! I started recently on mine and it's pretty fun so far.

A good list of tools and supplies to have (I'm just letting you know since you didn't mention anything and I wish I could have used the help when I started):

1. Dremel
2. Spiral saw or rotary saw
3. Power sander
4. Plastic Epoxy and bondo
5. Face masks - there will be a lot of dust and smoke from grinding, sanding and soldering.
6. Working gloves and rubber gloves to keep your hands clean
7. Sandpaper
8. Desoldering iron - get one from radio shack for $10. Invaluable.

Hope my list helps. It gets spendy so be ready to fork over a good chunk of dough.

Good luck again.

Got all that stuff, thanks.

I got a concussion, so no work on the portable for a few days.

Cartridge based consoles generally don't turn on without a game. That's just fancy-schmancy CD based consoles

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! I got my SNES and the game and the Opened controller works awesome. Il post a vid of me playing super mario

In the mean time, my dad went and bought me a bunch of awesome stuff from the electronics store including:

A WP25 Weller soldering iron (epic )
200 feet of wire (I dont know why the Heck he bought so much)
Flux (not that flux! the actually rosin flux)
An awesome multi meter with coninuity beeper (it beeps, coolness.)
100 feet of Cat5 (to hook up mah Xbox without having it halfway across the room)
Tacts (clicky ones for bumpers)
Wire stripers (hurray, no more cutting myself on that Xacto )

and then I saw the soldering pump, I was like... Wrong thing. He said he could pick up the turkey baster next week. He got me a pump like this for 14$

Image

Does it look Flux? should I just get them Iron?

For 20$, I can get this beastly thing
Image

Problem is, its 45 watts, and I might damage the board with it.

Which one do you think I should get (already have them pump, might get both :D )

The exact desoldering iron can be bought at radio shack for $10 new. I use it, works wonders.

NO radioshack where I live, or anywhere ive seen in Canada, so Im buying a slightly better one from QuaelElectronics, 20$ is still a good price, only concern is that its 45 watts, really high and might fry something.

My desoldering iron is that style, but with the iron and the pump as one unit. I like that it only requires one hand to operate after pushing the plunger down, so I have a hand free to hold the board or grab a component. Only problem is it likes to leak the solder back down. I usually hold mine upside down between desoldering to let the solder drain to the holding area.

Problems with 45W? Make yourself one of these!

Image

I made this one for like $8 or $10. Really useful. It makes the soldering iron make a buzzing noise, though... not sure what that means, but it still works to lower the temperature of the iron!

All you need is the dimmer switch in the middle along with the outlet in a project box and then use a power cable from an old monitor or something useless. I only used the on/off switch on the left because I didn't know that the dimmer switch had an actual off position that it clicked into.
