Insane NDS-to-GBA Project

Post by Klappstuhl »

Image

The Concept of this Project will be that I want to downgrade a Nintendo DS into a Gameboy Advance that won't use the Top Screen.

...

I know, that's why it is called Insane NDS-to-GBA Project.

But, before this crazy attempt gets started, I need to ask you all for some help.

A) I have no knowledge what-so-ever in Portable Hacking and
B) Need to know if this is possible before I invest ~100 bucks into a dead end.

Mmmmkkkaayyy...as you can see, I don't post very often at all, but I troll these forums all the time, and I have to say it....WTF is the point of this brother? What you are wanting to make is a Landscape backlit GBA correct? If so, then I would suggest that you go and get yourself an original GBA and LED backlight mod it. GBA's are like 20USD tops, and the LED mod is dead simple=2 white LEDs connected to the main power switch, or with a switch inbetween to play in lighted conditions...maybe an hour worth of work, and 30 USD tops for stuff.

This has been done before.
I think there's a certain pin you need to bridge to make it work without the top screen, but I don't know off of the top of my head.

You could just buy a micro. :D

If you do this, get a DS off ebay with a broken top screen. You will save money doing this.

That's it, that's exactly my problem. I'm somebody who has a huge problem with that *$%&ing tiny screen. I'm already short-sighted and wear glasses, don't need to strain my eyes any further.

This is mostly about shape and the button layout more than about anything else. I've got an old GBA lying around, but I can neither relocate the shoulder buttons, nor will it get flat enough to fit into the replacement NDS case I bought because of the batteries it uses.

Basically, I want this:

...minus the pen though.

That's my plan for this, actually.

I would pm tysonDS about this, he could tell you the pins to bridge to make it stop checking for the top screen.

That's just a setting on the DS you (might) have to change.

A Setting? Is there an Option Menu in which this can be configured?

Wow. Sounds like I won't have to use any Homebrew Software then, that's great! Thanks for your response!

Two tips:

If you do end up doing this, remove the touchscreen layer for greater clarity, and get a normal screen cover.

Also, why not get one of those neat backlit GBA SPs? They are brighter than the DS phat, the same as a DS Lite or micro. And the DS is 3", the GBA SP is 2.9", very little difference.

Will do. There's not much use for it after this mod anyway.

I don't really have a problem with the screen being a bit smaller than before, as long as it's not as small as the micro's screen.

Also, the SP has another button layout and would be hard to rewire into the shape that I want. I suck at soldering >.<

One more thing: Why not just use it as a DS, too? The DS is a REALLY nice system, tons of sweet games, and all manner of homebrew and emulators if you get a flashcart ($10). You can also use them to play backup copies of your games.

Here is what you should do:

Buy DS with busted BOTTOM SCREEN; Much easier to replace then the top one.

Buy a replacement bottom screen on dealextreme.com (Great site) for $9.

Total cost would probably be about $50-60, and you could also get a new case and flashcart for another $20, leaving you with a totally pimped, brand new looking DS Lite foe about $75.

You should just do a crazy case mod to a normal DS, make the 2nd screen fold out only when you need it.
