Danger area is a bit like an artist gets - trick is knowing when to put the brush down and stop adding a bit here and a bit there; there gets a stage where everything looks as perfect as it can and anything extra will make it look progressively naff; you then spend ages trying to recover desperately to get it back the way it was. I have been there in the past; don't want to make that mistake again!! (after spending so much time getting to this project stage).

In that analogy, I think it is time to "put the brush down" on the front and decide at the end about if anything should be added to the case front. The case back is a different matter entirely; that can have decals, and needed, to break up the bleakness of a blank case otherwise. I also need to paint the inside of the CD tray black.

You can make it work, but your sense of scale is way off when you're adding the text in Photoshop (or whatever you have).

Scale things down, way down.

I think that simple icons work better, instead of text, IMHO

You definitely need something below the screen, it looks empty.
I think I simple black PS logo would suffice.

Oops, double posted.

I have something to say anyway.

Marshallh is right, icons>text for contrast and volume.

Really like Marshall's mock-up. He is on the right track, use a simple, small font. No-caps looks pretty good. But it's all up to you, Bacteria, of course...

marshallh - Yes, my sense of scale and text perspective sucks in graphics programs; what you produced in the pic looks realistic; thanks for that. The simple text font looks nice and the medium grey looks nice. I presume the font was Arial or similar?

Like the icons (contrast and volume in pic), just the ones I referred to; although I don't have the icons at the moment - can anyone post them please? It would save me some time. Are there any icons also for Select and Start I could use - any ideas??

exploding.monkey - ...which is?... I was looking before at http://www.1001freefonts.com/fonts/afonts.htm The standard plain one in marshallh's pic is probably best though, will experiment with standard fonts.

Mario - Yes, I like it too. This sort of thing (graphics work) isn't my strength, which is why I was looking around for suggestions - thanks again marshallh.

I agree, it looks better without the big text. I like marshall's logos, though. Maybe a playstation logo or the PSOne font, but make sure it's not too big

The font I used is Zurich Ex BT

Not sure on the PSone logo, but ITC Bauhaus Medium is a good approximation

Yes, indeed; same case can also be used for an N64 system (internal game cart too); and it will be made (next project); bear with me!

Looked on two free font sites: 1st , 2nd and decided on Continuum Medium as the font.

Used this black enamel paint (small model pot), no 8, matt black, to paint the edges of the backing plate and also the CD mechanism surround and enclosure.

Image

Held the CD mechanism in place; to show the effect; two tone works well.

Image

Used the photo quality glossy sticker inkjet decal paper as suggested before; and spent a while getting a nice logo designed. In the pic also shows the sticker which will go under the screen on the front of the case. Thought it was a nice mix.

Image

Being sticky labels and not the transparent plastic sheet you get in Airfix kits, it needs a steady hand to cut out the shapes.

Back is complete; just need to make sure each edge of the sticky labels are pressed down fully, then give it a coat or two of varnish to preserve it.

Ok, this sticky paper is not right for the lettering decals. Just bought some "White Inkjet Waterslide Decal Paper Pack 10 A4 Sheets". This is the right stuff.

As the sticky label was on fast to the case, tidied it up my making a black border around the edges to make it look really smart.
