Once the tray is secured in place, with Poly-weld and finished off with hot glue (to fill in some gaps but not to add strength; the Poly-weld will provide a weld glue rather than a bond glue), I will fill in the remaining gaps and sides with bondo. The CD tray will be spray painted with the rest of the case to give a uniform colour. I will also paint the CD mechanism to change the grey to off-white colour) too. Uniformity. Only the black parts of the CD mechanism will remain, as a nice contrast.

Yes, the magnets will work fine. That was a really good suggestion from fellow members. If I have any issues with rotation, I have another trick up my sleeve, which makes great sense - take advantage of the screw holes themselves - connect short shafts to attach to the case top and pop into the straw (screw) holes to keep position, the magnets to hold the plate in place. :D This will work really effectively and also have the advantage that the logo at the back of the case will not rotate! :D

Anyway, I have two hours for project work today, so let's crack on with it!! :D

Kyo - Thanks for the comment. By the time I finish with this portable it will look near commercial quality grade and something I will be very proud of. I hope others share my vision and buy some of my case kits too, that would be lovely!

UPDATE:

Seems the Poly-weld plastic glue doesn't like to stick the PSone plastic to the Plasticard I used for the vacuum forming. Not sure which surface is the issue yet; so I had to use hot glue. Sticks both surfaces really well (I don't have good epoxy glue, tried some before and it was awful, so staying with that I know about!). Not a problem anyway; hey, I live in the UK, so the weather on a hot day (yes we get some occasionally) in a car left out in the sunshine, only gets to 36c, at worst case :P Not an issue for me as I won't leave my system in the car anyway - anyone buying my kits and making their own can use epoxy, or whatever; up to them!

Also, cut out the last of the shoulder buttons.

I had wanted to have the memory card to slot into the system at the top of the case; would be ok, but will be close to the CD mechanism. If I move the batteries a little, as in the pic below, there is plenty of space for a memory card slot at the bottom of the case (and have the memory card sticking out about 9mm so it can be easily removed and replaced as needed).

Image

As you see, there is plenty of room for the PSone controller boards too.

Out of time today, tomorrow I will get the memory card hole cut out and also an on/off switch; and build a surround for the inside of the CD tray and also a plug hole for recharging the batteries.

Case will then be complete and ready to spray paint.

Assembling and documenting the internals for the system and finishing the project is within sight now; will be done before Xmas; although I doubt I will have time to get everything documented and prepared to sell my kits before Xmas as there is a lot of work to do to get to that stage; first half of January however is very achievable.

The batteries will be secured in place and connected in parallel to give 7.4v at 4000mA, which should last about 2 hours 10 mins playtime. I will connect a plug to the system so I can recharge them, by connecting them to a proper Canon BP-911 charger (does BP-915 and BP-911 cells), so safe to recharge them fine.

the psone screen minimum is 6.89, according to master bacteria himself.

That pic is about a millimeter off of being actual size on my screen. Really puts things into perspective with the memory card in place.

I'm getting really excited at this point. Its looking fabulous. I want one!

It's really cool to see so many new techniques applied. I'm sure others are contemplating how to use them in their portables just like I am. :D

HBN - Pleased you love it; you will have the chance to make one if you want in about a month! All in good time!!

- Excellent, I like to share my innovations so others can consider them for their project working too. One of the benefits of this forum is that people share their knowledge and techniques with others, which is a principle I am enthusiastic about.

I was referred to as being akin to "Telsa" in a different thread because I plan things out to fine detail, then apply them in drawings and then make to that exacting design. In saying that, there are hiccups along the way that force you think out of the box and design a process "on the hoof" to resolve a problem. That is one of the things which makes a project fun after all, no matter how well you plan something, there are always deviations! :D

I have about 3 hours or so today for project work; time to crack on! :D :D

Okey dokey, progress report for day:

Cut out hole for the memory card in the center of the case, 1mm larger all around than a memory card so it can be added / replaced as required.

Image

Desoldered the 2nd memory card / controller port from a PSone console board.

Image

Removed it, and lifted the backing plastic off, using a screwdriver to pry it up.

Image

Cut along the two lines in the pic, as looking at the port, it looked like it was separable between the memory port and controller port. I was right.

Image

Lifted off easily.

Image

Image

Put the memory card into the slot and into case with the CD mechanism in place so it is easy to see how far back the card can go. Appears that two beads, 5mm high, hot glued in place gives enough height to make the assembly about level.

Image

Ideal, 6mm out of the case is easy to grip and remove and insert a new one into the case.

Image

This is what it looks like with the memory card removed:

Image

I had tried to put in the memory card flap, however it didn't look right and was hard to secure in place. I have an idea of how to custom make one, if I want to, using foam. Not sure if I will bother though.

Out of project time again today, back tomorrow!

BTW - just received my magnets, 50 units 4mm x 1mm. They are strong little things!! :D Four of them will certainly do the job. Think I will buy some more, handy, and anyway, I will need to supply four per kit I sell so buyers can use them too.

Women just don't understand! We're men, it's what we do :D

I think those kits you're selling will lead to quite some beautiful portables, though not unique, which is why I have mixed feelings about them. It's kind of like with bens book, it helps people building portables that don't look like crap, but you get tired of seeing them, it's just not as interesting anymore.

None the less I wish you the bestest of luck with your "business".

You know everything always looks so big when you see it on pictures, but then you look at your PSOne or at a picture with your hand in it and you see, this is actually really tiny in real life.

Thanks Brian, high praise indeed! :D

Using the official memory cart port means the card inserts and removes very easily. Ideal! :D

Kyo - Indeed, hobbies are fun!

People can customise my cases, and use different coloured buttons, etc if they wish  Nothing wrong with a standardised system, iPod anyone?? Issue of course is that the casemaking is one of the hardest parts of a project, so by providing a casing and guide to making a system fit in it, it helps.

It looks like the same case can be used for an N64, Retro Duo or similar (mobo must be no bigger than a PSone console board) too - with internal cart. Standardisation! I won't sell it as such until I have made such systems and made their guides (so initially selling it as PSone), but looks big enough to take the other systems and internal game cart.

Once you get this portable done, maybe you can get a custom title. Master Bacteria would be perfect. :)

Wonderful, wonderful work. I love being able to come to this topic every day knowing I have an update to read all about. :D

You have really innovative ideas! They are all wonderful. Your ingenuity inspires me.

By the way, you said you have OCD? Is it helpful when doing things like relocating cartridge slots? I find tasks like that boring and hard to focus on. :P

Mario - Kind words, thanks! :D

No, I don't have OCD, I have mild Aspergers Syndrome (according to my doctor and Occupational Therapy at work), the mild OCD I have turns out to be normal in Aspergers. It has some positive and negative traits, some of the positive traits of it have proven handy in my project work.
