Help for a person with no experience

Post by IHeartMySnes »

Im interested in putting a SNESp together for myself. I'v hit a small snag though: I have no idea what I would be doing.

I'm at the very bottom right now. I'v been reading these forums for a couple days non-stop. (Seriously, Iv had this website open for 10 hours straight today) I'm 14. I don't understand what you people are talking about. I even found a guide to making a SNESp that was exherted from Ben's book, but I couldnt really understand that either.

I'm just hoping anybody might be willing to help me understand the basics of this whole thing, hopefully with lots of pictures, because they help so much. Just keep in mind, I have absolutely no experience. Try and use as little technical terms as possible.

I probably can't afford it for a couple months, but I want to start planning first, so when I can start, I have a parts list, a plan for the case, and I know what I'm doing.

So basically, if anybody could tell me what parts I would need, and how to actually build it in a way I could possibly understand, I would be really greatful. I'm sorry I seem so needy and helpless, but, I need someplace to get started, and I need to slightly know what I'm doing to get started.

Edit: I'd just like to add up here that I do have access to solder and a soldering iron.

i dont own an Super Nintendo, but i could help you a bit.

heres a good link: http://portablesofdoom.org/index.php

Stuff you'd need are:

Snes
contoller
battery
screen
material for your case
solder
wires and conectors
screwdrivers

and probaly a bunch of other things. Portablizing is a simple concept: put a console, a controller, a battery and screen together in a small case.

heres a really rough guide of what ( i think) your supposed to do (for a really crappy portable)

1: take the console and the controller out of the case

2: use AV cables (or whatever the snes comes with) and connect the console to a pocket tv (with an Av output or whatever its called)

3: get a battery of the same voltage as the adaptor and ask somehow how to solder a battery to the adaptor.

4: stuff it in a small case and make holes for buttons and screen

this is a really rough guide, so can other people edit it?

hope it helps.

]EDIT

whats your budget?

First step, buy a soldering iron, solder, and get some practice.

lol If you can't afford a soldering iron and solder, put the project on hold until you can. You won't get ANYWHERE without them.

Thanks for the replys

@Exploding.Monkey - Thanks for the link, it's helps a bit. The guide is pretty vague, though..

@Everyone Else - My dad has a soldering iron and solder last time I checked... Yeah, he does. I remember using it when we were doing the plumbing for our downstairs bathroom. I'll put that up top so everybody knows from know on.

My budget right know would best be described as... undetermined. I have some money, but the little money I have will start being spent on christmas related things soon. But in contrast, if I get a parts list together, I could ask for some of that stuff, and probably Ben's book for christmas.

btw, i prefer being called monkey man, but its too late to change my name now.

yes, i know then guide was really sh!tty, but i i thought you wouldnt an exact step by step guide to a portable you might think is ugly. those are just the basic steps, and you fill in the rest.

Sorry Monkey Man

I understand your point, and when I was talking about an indepth guide, I meant moreso for the wiring and electrical work, which I understand barely at all. I intend on designing my own case, or doing the same ZN-40 design everybody does. havent decided yet.

If you were using that soldering iron for plumbing, I can almost guarantee it will be useless for fine electronics.

Agreed. You really will need to invest in some electrical solder. Plumbing solder doesn't conduct electricity very well, and electrical solder is designed to.

Damn, that's what I was afraid of. Is the soldering iron itself still ok? Or do I need a new one of those, too?

What's the wattage on it? Personally, I'll use anything from 25w to 40w. Smaller than that generally won't heat up the solder very well. I've never used anything larger, so I don't know if it would cause damage or not. I've burned boards by being sloppy with a 40w, though, so I'd be hesitant to use anything larger.

I use a 30w iron; and cheap ones to boot - cost about £4.50 each including postage; work fine though.

You're probably going to need a new one of those, too. I've never heard of a soldering iron being used in a plumbing application, are you sure you don't mean a soldering torch?

If it doesn't look something like this, then you might have to go and buy a new soldering iron:
