Minimum Activiations? How about no.
I'm part of that boycott thing, which is "Don't buy EA games, don't even pirate them", and since Spore undersold terribly, the word IS out. About 3 people, who have hardly any slightest idea bout games, piracy, have all asked me about Spore, and i've told them the issue and each one replied with "oh, forget that then", so even casuals are taking note of this. IT'S WRONG, if they are gonna be pricks about their software and piracy, then i'll be pricks about buying it.

Crysis Warhead is one of the finest FPS games of the year, it's minimum activation thing is STILL offputting.

Why should we pay full price for a glorified rental? Every pirated copy of my software runs better and is easier on the user-end than the software itself! Why should I piss about with activiations and online activations when a copy that I didn't pay for it's actually easier on my end! It should be the other way round.

I'm all for DRM and protection against piracy, I just don't want it done to an extreme like this.

I did try OO 3.0 on my EEE. Compared to MS Office on my EEE it is still crap. Hell Office 97 (which I have a copy of) works better then OO.

I've had activation problems, update problems, crashing problems - all from legal, legit, bought-and-paid-for software. Pirated software just works. You may or may not be able to update it, but you can always get the latest patched version online somewhere. At least it doesn't randomly decide that you've got the software installed in too many places, even if you've only got it installed in one place. Like Adobe did with me.
You know I have used this copy of Windows XP through about 4 different upgrades which required a complete reinstall of the OS. All I had to do was call up MS and tell them I reinstalled XP and they said "Okay here is the activation key, Thank you for being a legit user!". It took me maybe 15 minutes to do that.
chad78 wrote:
The problem is that companies assume users are pirates, whether they are or not. They assume that if you've reinstalled software on more than one computer - you are a pirate. You are selling our software and keeping it for yourself. Or you are giving it away. They never assume that you just bought a new computer. And god help you if you forget to delete it off your old computer if you do. That is assuming you are even able to activate your same serial number on the new computer in the first place.
If 20% (I dont know the real number but I suspect its pretty high) of the users of your software didn't pay for it I would act the same way.
chad78 wrote: Why pay $500 - $3000 for the privilidge of being persecuted every time you update your hard drive or get a new computer? It's stupid.
Again call the company in question and they will help you out.

Negative does bring up an important issue however. I am fully against minimum installs on software. XP does do this with activation but it is easy to get around (ie call MS). Also another thing I don't like is activation. What happens if EA goes under and there activation servers go offline? You boned thats what.

Maybe we should institute a death penalty for piracy and then companies can relax there DRM restrictions?

Google Docs is better than Open Office (yes, I have OOo3). I'm doing a project for my statistics class, and when you sort a column of a spreadsheet, it just sorts that column, leaving the other data and screwing up the spreadsheet. I try it in Google Docs and it works perfect, sorts the data and moves the corresponding data in the other columns with it. This works in MS Office, too, but I can't find my Office XP CD.

I use open office and will never again use the Microsoft office crap.

I pirate becuase I haven't gotten my moneys worth out of a game/movie/software/cd in years.

When I pay for something I expect to own it and for it to be worth what I payed.

I'm sick of paying 60$ for a HD piece of crap. I want a video game.

Then is the game worth your time to play it? Apparently not.

Sure it is a good way to waste time but, not for 60$. I want a better game for that money but all companies ever do is crap out another halo or final fantasy.

Fallout 3 looks like its worth $50 to me. (PC games are $10 cheaper Woohoo!)

Left for Dead looks great for $50 as well.

If all they do is crap out another halo why not play Halo and not buy another game? Your argument is failing in logic.

My argument is not failing logic. What I'm saying is that I don't see anything so amazing as to spend that much money on. Maybe 20, 30, and if it looks really awesome $40.

The games look great but something is inherently missing. Has been for this entire generation of games.

This is how I see this generation of video games.
Rehash:
Halo 3: its halo in HD
GTA 4: its GTA in HD
Mario party: its mario party in hd.

Here is what I want. No more Zelda, Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy, Halo.
Those series were the staple of my child hood (except for halo) but now are nothing but whored out franchises that "print money". Companies that make new and original things are bought out or buried under crap.

Think of it as how much money you pay per hour of game time. A $50 game that lasts ohh 12 hours (standard time for a FPS?) that is a little over $4 an hour. Which is around what a movie costs at a good theater. If that game happens to be an RPG which typically have over 20 sometimes 40 hours of game play you knock it down to $1-$2 an hour.

You can always wait a few years till Mario Party 56 drops to $15 you know

So by your logic a Ferrari is a cool car but I don't think its worth the sticker price so it is alright to steal it. That is where your argument fails.

Um, you have to select all the columns you want to sort, not just the one you want to sort by. That's the same behavior in MS Office. Just because you don't know how it works doesn't mean it sucks. (I just tested it on OOo 3.0 on Mac OS X.)

I destroyed a dead SNES once to see what is inside - with a hammer - does that count as console hacking?

Ok, I stand partially corrected. The stupid sort buttons on the toolbar in OOo only sort whats selected, you have to go to data>sort to do an intelligent sort. How many times do you want to just sort one column but leave everything else where it is? Even a simple list of names and phone numbers gets messed up if you do that. Google Docs just has buttons to sort, and it automatically sorts everything by the selected column. Office XP makes you go through the menus in the first place to sort, so there is no confusion.
OOo 3 is better than Office 2007, though, 2007's layout is so time consuming.
