Playing burned games will kill the system, so don't. You'll overwork it, forcing the system to constantly seek for comparatively randomly ordered files. Extra labor for the motors and the laser diode. Death will come much sooner.

If you know how to burn and format your iso there should be no problems. Of course some commercial games illegasl release (like a version of SOA that decompress files on the fly, a masterpiece btw, but hard for the lens) might tear up your drive, but stick to "normal" and "good" backups, that are dummied, sorted and downsampled correctly, and you should have no problems. Furthermore, emulator often only seeks a little bit on the cd to load the program and then the roms, so it won't kill your lens that fats.

I got my DC since 2001, and it ran a thousands of hours on cd-r media (mainly NesterDC and my own backup of thps2 with custom music) and it still works like a charm !

You do know that the laser diodes are rated by thousands of hours of operation, so don't be too surprised if your DC becomes nothing but a VMU manager before too long.

That depend on how much time you use it, not on what you read with it.

That's like saying the age of your car is more important than the mileage you put on it.

WHAT YOU READ with a Dreamcast determines how much work the laser diode has to perform. Burn a NesterDC disc with all the fixin's, fire it up, and browse through the cover gallery. Then pop in, oh, Carrier, or Shenmue or something. Ah! The system accesses the disc for shorter periods of time, and less frequently! Now toss in your burned copy of Ikaruga. Riiiiight.

Please remember that I said with PROPER hacking. Games must be dummied and sorted and optimized for being ok on cd-r

Most of the crap releases found onteh internet would actually kill your lens.

I don't wanna be rude on you, as you are on me actually, but I don't think you even know how to make a proper backup with the above said optimizations.

I palyed a lot of hours on my DC and the lens is still like perfect. I amde a lot of these hours on backup and emulators.

If you don't wanna trust me ok. It's your right, but I'm now the only one, i'm far from it.

About lens dying, I said that yeah you lens will die one day, but playing a well-made cd-r will not "break" it a lot more than playing a gd-rom.

With respect

I inform on the side of caution to the layperson, since it is quite obvious that a person who is asking if playing burned games would damage their Dreamcast would not be in the know with advanced warez burning techniques.

tl;dr:
By simply downloading disc images and playing burned game on your Dreamcast, you will kill your system much faster than you would by playing factory-pressed games.

But hey, if you have access to a warehouse full of unopened DCs, feel free to kill them. I mean, it's not like there's a limited supply of them, and certainly none that you can buy second, third, or even fifth-hand are on their last legs.

lol ya I've been through 3 of them. well lost one of them. the other 2 got screwed. but yeah I'de rather buy another system then buy all the games. plus the emulation on the DC is the best in my opinion. for a console anyways.

Ya, and it won't hurt the lense anyway, I'm on the same laser from 8 years ago, and I've been playing burns for 6 years.

I have like 60 burnt games, Shenmue 1 and 2, Which I've beat like 2 times each, and many other games that take a lot of loading. It's only total retards who don't have the files dummied/sorted correctly that killed thier lasers.

Now stop with the freaking crazy war Mister X.

You're inserting your own interpretation between the lines.

Allow me to spend time explaining in the form of artful reiteration.

"Not only was it some mere event, nay, this is truly an understatement, but it was outright villainous baggery of the most rancid douche variety that caused difficulty over at DC Emulation, for a former friend of that ship's captain did plot to destroy the site utterly, with great contempt, for no logical reason, and was nearly completely successful."

Drama and video games. My eyes, they loop the loop!

I don't wanna do a org/com war here but i really don't care about the reasons of the problem and i didn't expressed my opinion in the last reply.

IMO .org is now the only up-to-date of the 2 that's it. .com isn't updated since april, links are almost all dead and the forum is 404.

And there was a reason for the domain change, cheeta wanted to put ads on the site for his own blog, and even redirected the site to his blog, I won't give my opinion on what darc did them it' of his own buisiness. Notre that I only depicts what happened I don't give my opinion or judge the acts of any of them. I only say i think one site is dead and the other is alive,

Now please stop hatin' and being bitter, were here for dc and portables not for flame wars !

Peace!

You'll all have to tell me where you buy your drama-vision goggles.

So I can burn the store down.
