Wow, you're really making yourself sound smart.

I use Linux because Windows and Mac are too limiting and/or easy to use. For other people who are less technologically inclined, I recommend Macs. And If you're too stubborn for that, I at least make sure that you find the right PC. But I definitely don't recommend Linux to those who aren't prepared to deal with it.

I don't want to make an "I'm leaving" thread, but I've sort of lost interest in this board. So if you notice that I'm gone, that's why.

I'm a fan of linux. Not because it's specifically better than Windows, or because it makes you look cool on the internets, but because everything for it is free. I'm a big fan of open-source and public domain software, it's a really cool thing, and I enjoy using quite some of those programs myself.

I, however, also am a big fan of piracy, which is why I use windows. I really don't think any OS is better than the other, they both have their ups and downs

Windows:
-It's got most commercial software, because most people use it
-You can get most Linux programs on windows as well, because they're open source
-I'm used to it
-Some programs I depend on do not have good linux counterparts (mostly flash)

Linux:
-it's free
-it works
-it's compatible to my machine, and finding drivers is less of a hassle
-it's more secure due to not having root access
-it makes you look cool on the internet

Yeah, those people. They're usually anti-authority and latch onto Linux because of it's decentralized development. More times than not they don't really know that much about Linux. I know one guy in real life like this, annoys the heck out of me. I don't think they really represent the majority of Linux users, but are, instead, a vocal minority.

A distro with good package maintainers (package maintainers are the key), it's not so much hard as different. With good package maintainers dependency hell goes away. You get anything you'd need from a central program, usually with a graphical version, instead of the usual download from website and double click downloaded file paradigm of Windows/Mac.

Plus, Windows is very limiting in a lot of ways being closed, it's like trying to dance with a body cast on in some regards.

Windows Vista beats Ubuntu Linux so badly... sorry.
I'm going to have to kick you in the nuts for a second; while I myself don't like to use Linux for more than a few liveCD tasks like recovery and very small systems, I must say you are being an idiot here.

Microsoft Office is not only ridiculously overpriced, it's slow. It's very inefficient. Openoffice supports the format nearly perfectly anyway!

The gimp? It's, in a technical sense great, but personally I don't like it. I hate photoshop too, though, it too is slow and inefficient.

Vista is a horrid system, shut up. you can change the way linux looks nearly indefinitely. Why not make a new skin with your precious photoshop?

Personally, I hate Ubuntu. Slackware and SLAX are the ones that I've come to like most.

I must side with you in one sense that I hate how everyone is so overhyped about Firefox. Calm down everyone, it's just a browser. "But it has addons!" Yeah, addons to replace features it's missing!

Seriously! Internet exploder is horrible, but what's wrong with Safari and Opera? Opera (beta 9.5), from what I can tell, feels like a firefox that renders things slightly better, and has much better scrolling (that jerky trash in forefox they call "smooth scrolling" is... well, jerky)

From personal exprience, I found Openoffice to be unstable and crash often.
From personal experience, you're either

-Using an old version
-Using an unstable beta
-Lying out of your "arse" (you sound REALLY COOL when you censor things)

Criticising linux is fine. Saying you dislike it is fine. Stupidly attacking it with invalid answers is not fine, and you will be argued against. Deal with it.

I've never used Linux. I want that known. Though I do want to. Anyway, my new laptop has Vista. And let me just say this:

DOS is better than Vista. A better OS could be made using the BASIC programing language. A computer with NO operating system AT ALL is better than Vista.

Its not compatible with anything. Sure, it connects to the internet okay (it will randomly cut out). But it wont detect any of the devices I have attached the the network. Meaning all the artwork I have on my Desktop...Needs to be burned to SIX DL-DVDs because Vista refuses to detect my shared files on the network.

The only thing Vista has going for it is;
Stunning looks (For some people this matters).
Cross-platforming with the 360 (Assuming it ever works. Last I heard, it bombed horribly).
And the game InkBall (Best preloaded game EVER!).

Sadly, I'll lose my beloved game InkBall when I do this....But I'm "upgrading" to XP as soon as I can (Because XP is a far more stable OS than Vista, I consider it an upgrade).

Sorry to quote an old statement, but its just my two cents on the subject.

Hah, you won't even lose inkball; someone got all the Vista games running on XP, including Inkball and that fancy new Minesweeper. I'd skip the Purble Place though.

My teacher has a tablet with XP, and it has Inkball...
</offtopic>

I like both, but I prefer linux on my desktop, only because my family is computer illiterate (for lack of a better term) and basically downloaded the internet on it, so it takes 15 minutes to boot, 10 minutes to log in and forever to do anything else. So windows gets used for Roller Coaster Tycoon! I would make a nice little pros/cons/mac graph but:
A. I'm Lazy
B. It's been done, a lot
Why is it that every time I post in a thread, it dies?

I know this kid at my school, he is one grade higher than me, and everyone thinks he's smart because he uses linux. They think he's the best electric engineer and programmer. (he really doesnt do either) He tries to tell people the same fanboy crap about no viruses and compass fusion. He has suckered people into letting him install linux onto thier computers. A lot of people agree with him because he sounds smart, not because he's right. (but they don't know that) After reading through this topic, I have learned that I need to go and tell him(pwn him with) the facts. lol this is gonna be fun.

Btw: Windows XP is what I use. I'm not a fanboy of it either.

What facts are you referring to? There has been a lot of misinformation and fanboyism in this topic. If you're talking about Linux not getting viruses, the truth is there are a lot less out there for Linux than Windows, so it's kind of like a security through obscurity. I have heard that there are fewer security flaws in Linux than Windows, but that can be debated until we all turn blue.

Personally, I have a VMWare image of Ubuntu. I haven't started it up in months though, I have no reason to. Mac OS X serves me perfectly for day to day operations and should there be some Windows application I need I can either open up a Virtual Machine or Boot Camp into Windows.
