Controller by the book

Post by Kurt_ »

Ok well I'm haivng a lot of trouble getting the controller to work. I did the one from the book with tact switches and stuff. I know you guys can't help much, but other than checking for loose/bad connections, is there anything else I can do? Also, Tim ordered me some 4021 chips that are iffy if they're the right thing.

They're from Digikey, product number 497-1352-5-ND
They're an "IC 8STAGE SHIFT REGISTER 16 DIP"
The MFG Part Number is HCF 4021BEY

The chip has this on it:

Code: Select all

___________
  HCF4021BE
) W99020341
  MALAYSIA
Are these the right chips? Or do I need to go looking for other ones and replace it?
Hey, sup?

Make sure your chip isn't flipped the wrong way. That's happened to me before.

I tired these twice using the perfboard, but I couldn't get them to work...check for solder bridging connections you do NOT want to be fromed. If not, I might be able to etch you a pair if I ever get around to finishing my design. I've done the schematics with EAGLE, but I am having trouble designing the physical boards.

Check the wires. The first time I put my controller together, I had it wired incorrectly.

But could somebody with experience please look into the chip and check if it's the right one? If THAT'S the problem...

The correct number for the 4021 would be 296-2040-5-ND. It is on the mistakes (or whatever you call it) page of the book page and it suggests you get those instead of wasting NES controllers.

But would the ones i have RIGHT NOW work? If not i'll order me up some of those. But I'd rather knowt hat mine work. Meanwhile, I'll check the rest of my connections (found 2 already) and keep trying.

I seriously doubt that some random part from out of the blue will work.

I'm pretty sure that's the correct one. Since the part number is 4021, that IC number is universal no matter what company makes it. Since it also says IC 8STAGE SHIFT REGISTER 16 DIP, that leads me to believe that its the correct part. However, if you rewire everything again and it still doesn't work, you might want to find different IC's.
