To clearify things. We use all of our brain, the idea that we only use 10% is a myth. Secondly you really couldn't store a human personality or memories in a computer for the simple fact that a human brain exceeds the fastest computer in every aspect thousands of times, and we store information chemicly not electricly.

As for rights going to the indevidual parts. Likely in this day and age, both will be consdiered human. Even though withoug a (if it does exsist) soul, you'd be either brain dead or about as intellegent as a rat. If you guy remember the feasco that was the Terry Shivo case, she was brain dead and yet both sides fought over wheather of not she should die.

Hey they made a movie like that, called The Island or something. I forgot what it was about, but it had something to do with life in a computer or something.

The island wasn't about that at all. It was about human rights.

A bunch of clones are grown then killed for parts. And they get pissed. And they're all like "Stop using us for parts!"

someday will come a time when there are new types of computer and new and radical forms of data storage, read the nights dawn trilogy by peter F hamilton, its cool and deals a lot with a technology of sorts called Bitek which is a form of biological computer and other things too. pretty nifty, a lot of science fiction has stuff like dna computers and computers that model the human brain yadda yadda yadda

*My first meaningfull post in this topic*

Perhaps a fifth generation computer which thinks like a human could run a dump of a brain (supposing it was possible),

As for the dump, I suppose you could do it by measuring the amounts of each chemical in the brain.

Although, this isn't my subject, so I'm probably going to back off for a while...

Guys the only way you'll get a computer to be able to work with a human mind is if it's a bio or biomech computer. There are prototypes that have been made that use organic nerons with silicon transistors. We're still a long way off from anything you guys might be thinking, like Ghost in the Shell.

Also I saw some of the movie TRON... I don't know what to say besides that had to be the worst computer related movie ever. The consept for it wasn't bad, nor for the time the graphics. Just the execution of that idea/consept was just terrible.

The body and the mind (what you saw fit to call the soul) cannot be sperated in the way you have suggested. The human mind is a function of our physical bodies used to perform specific tasks just like the rest of our organs.

Your mind or personality is defined by two things: the arrangement of the physical connections between neurons, and the active communication between those neurons. The former is primarily responsible for things like long-term memory, while the later is required for realtime operation. A man struck by lightning is ussually left unconscious, as the electrical aspect of his brain has in effect been shorted out. So long as he hasn't bashed in the side of his head, he usually wakes up a few hours or days later to continue on life as exactly who he was previously.

One human neuron could not represent one bit of data, because each neuron can interact with up to hundreds of others simulataneously. The hard drive array you would need to store all the information in a human brain would fit inside your bedroom. According to one estimate in a recent issue of Popular Science, the human brain can store about 1100TB of data. You would need, what, 2000 500GB hard drives? Unfortunately, our brains do not feature 'hard drive space' and 'ram', but a more unified system. We can access and manipulate any of those 1100TB of information almost instantly. So you'd need a 1100TB ramdrive with a very trustworthy power supply. In the end, the best way to create a human mind would be to Emulate the structures and interactions within a human brain. Human thoughts can take up to half a second to fully occur.

Really, the human brain is a great device, but some of you give it to much credit :P
