Hi. Just a simple question

Can you use the screen from a portable DVD player, Laptop and so on as an actual monitor with RGB/RCA inputs?


I mean, can you just find the pins and solder to them (And of course, plugging the backlight/inverter into something such as a DC adaptor to get the light working for now) to then get a picture from a PS1, PS2, N64, SEGA and Xbox (etc...)?

Or, if there is a way, let me know ASAP because I have a 5" Portable DVD player with only an output. NO INPUT. Is there anyway at all to make this take input by adding wires to the chip? As I read here http://forums.benheck.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=16518&start=15 on Marshallh's post - "If you can find the Y and C pins on your chip, you are set."

yes you can, but you require the lcd's controller board and that controller board must accept those inputs. most laptops dont
some portable dvd players do
you have no way of knowing if you got lucky with your portable dvd playe runless you crack it open

I have cracked it open - and taken everything apart

There is NO INPUT on my dvd player, so thats why I was wondering if there is anyway I can use the screen

Like, can I just soldier directly to the pins if I know what one is what?

Or like you replied, where can I get a controller board from for my 5" screen?


I mean, as a test I may open my PS2 portables screen and see if I can use that controller board because I believe all the pinouts therorectically are the same...

no, you can't solder directly to the LCD input; it won't work without a controller board, which usually costs far more than a PS1 screen.

Yes, usually the process is
1. If you are inputting S-video or Composite, look for a 3.57Mhz crystal or any that is a multiple.
It's also possible that the chips will use internal PLLs to derive their own clock from, say a 24 or 27MHz crystal, so all is not lost
2. Find datasheets for all the chips you can. Google, alldatasheets, etc.
3. Composite video is commonly referred to as CVBS in datasheets.
4. Most video decoder ICs are in quad flat packages (QFP). This means they have leads on all four sides, always surface mount.
5. If the datasheet has a reference schematic, use it. Sometimes you may need to add capacitors in series with the signals to remove any DC offsets (very rare)

I knew straight away to look on the internet (Google) for the chips. What I did to find them was I just typed in the number on the chip and usually some weird sites come up. But look around in the first page and you should, find a schematic

I wish you told me that earlier about the CVBS...
