Firstoff, I hope this is the right place. I'm brand new here.

I've had this idea of putting an NES in a .50 cal ammo can for a while now, and I've finally got a little time to mess with it now that finals are over. My friend told me about benheck.com, so I figured I'd get some input from you guys.

So far I've been using vomitsaw's nintoaster video as a guide, so even though I'm a total newbie to the technical stuff, I think I'm doing ok.

My questions for you guys are about layout. Here's my general idea: lay the board flat against the bottom and put the cartridge connector next to it. I'm hoping I'll have room to put a piece of plastic over the board and be able to use the space above to store games/controllers.

So, what do you guys think?

Progress so far:
• Disassemble NES
• Remove old stencil
• Cut new stencil
• Paint stencil
• Separate/strip harddrive cables
• Remove RF mod
• Remove 7805
• Remove expansion port
• Remove cart connector
• Disassemble game genie cart
• Desolder game genie
• Put connector on perf board
• Tin game genie and NES board pins
• Modify power indicator lamp
• Construct vid amp
• Cut controller port holes
• Drill power switch hole
• Drill RCA holes
• Drill reset switch hole
• Drill power indicator hole
• Cut power supply hole

• Wire cart connector
• Wire 7805
• Place 7805
• Connect vid amp
• Connect RCA ports

• Connect power supply
• Wire LEDs
• Wire reset switch
• Wire power switch
• Set MB
• Set cart connector
• Set MB
• Set power supply
• Cover MB
• Hope the damn thing works

I think it'll work. I don't see why you wouldn't have room above the mb for storage. It's definitely an interesting idea! I'd love to see it finished!

Here's a pic of the outside of the can. I had a heck of the time getting the stencil right-ish, as you can probably tell.

I've probably got eight to ten ammo cans laying around. When I was a CAP cadet, we used to trade the pararescue guys beer for ammo cans. We got around 50 all together.

I've made a huge mistake...maybe...I think.

I just finished half of the connector soldering, but take a look--I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I'm a little worried that I wired it backwards. Should I have wired the pins to the other side?

My plan is to convince the opposing side to sit down and play some Super C to resolve our differences.

1. Yes,you did wire it backwards but it does not affect it...too much
2. Add an screen and a battery and you are done!

Diggin' that ammo box action.

You might want to shorten those wires to the cart connector, if they're too long, the games won't boot.

Oh crap, I didn't know that. I'll be sure to test it before I glue everything down.

Ok, I've been out of town for a while, so I haven't had much time to work on the project. I just finished the case today. I still have a ton of work to do for the innards, but I'm pretty happy with the case. Here are a few pics.

Now for the hard part--figuring out how to wire everything successfully.

Alrighty guys, I really have next to no idea how to correctly wire, so I drew you what my understanding of it is currently.

The five dots on the left are on the NES board, left to right it's video, audio, 5vdc, reset, reset. I am using a lighted toggle switch, and it says "power" on the left prong, "acc" on the middle prong, and "ground" on the right prong. I want the light to come on when the NES is turned on. Is this the correct way to wire it?

WHOOPS. Ok, from the plug to the 7805 the red (hot) and black (ground) should be switched. I think.

Well I've finally got everything wired, but it doesn't work. The LED comes on and the speakers on the tv click when I flip the switch, but that's about it...any suggestions on what I need to do to make it work?

EDIT: The 7805 gets too hot to touch the heatsink it's attached to in about 30 seconds...something tells me that's a bad sign.

Ideas?

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd now one of the power LEDs is dead. The most I could get on the screen today was purple diagonal squiggles..
