It was actually the circuit board for the sony psone lcd that touched the heatsink!

The cable is tight in the back, because I hotglued the lcd + board so they couldn't move!

PSONE LCD Starts, then the top part fades?

Hi, I was putting together my n64 portable last night, and couldn't get any sound from the psone lcd from the n64, so upon investigating,
I accidentaly shorted out the lcd motherboard against the n64 heatsink!!!!

Now the psone screen starts fine, and then the top half of the screen fades away ...

I've settled for a 12v power source consisting of 10 AAs, the psone lcd will now become friends with a 7808!

Now all I need is some sort of charging circuit for the AA's, preferably one that lets me play while charging, and carries on charging when I turn off the N64.

Any ideas on this?

I think he's talking about using a higher supply voltage for the dc-dc converters and using the 7808 to regulate it before the lcd for the few components before the 7805s

Thats exactly it!!!!!

I just didnt want to use higher than 7.2v, therefore not requiring the 7808 for the lcd, but the dc dc ...

I wanted to keep the voltage at 7.2v so that I could supply the psone modded screen, I suppose I could increase the voltage and use a 7808 to supply the screen.

I have a texas instuments 2A 3.3v dc dc convertor for the n64.

I was hoping that the convertor would run on 7.2!

Will 7.2V be sufficient?

I have one of those dc dc convertors from Ti, and somewhere I read that they can run on 7.2V on this forum, is this true?

So will a 7.2v RC car battery pack power my Psone screen and n64? or is that not enough voltage for the convertor?

Cheers!

So it looks like a dc dc voltage convertor is the way ahead then?

It's going to run a modded psone screen and N64.

Can anyone suggest a good configuration?

Regulator and resistor design makes 5v instead of 3.3v?

Hi, I'm just in the final stages of my portable n64 project, and I have just made a regulator circuit, and found it doesn't reduce the voltage as expected.

I have connected a 2 X 8505 regulators each with a 3 ohm resistor on the output legs (as per Triton's drawing), and the voltage drops to about ...

Just ebayed a new soldering iron, 30w, only 4 pounds!

With my old one it will only melt solder on certain parts of the tip, so when the new iron comes i'll carry on!

hmm, new tips, or a little more for a whole new one :P

n64 cart slot solder not melting very well

Hi, Im currently in the process of relocating the n64 cart slot.

I have about 10 wires or so that really do not seem to like being soldered to the motherboard, I've been using a 15w soldering iron, even with my 30w soldering iron, the solder doesnt really seem to melt.

I have been using rosin flux ...

on the right hand side of the black blob is a via, this needs to be cut as well.

so basically cut all the lines on the chip, all the vias, desolder any solder blobs and cut any vias underneath them.

I'll have to post a pic in a couple of days.

When I got in from work I tried it with the jumper pak and it hasn't crashed at all yet!

The funny thing was, with the 3rd party expansion pak, if I wobbled the 007 game slightly during gameplay, it would freeze, but only on bond, now I can wobble it a lot, and it won't freeze!

Must be the pak ...

Hi, my Ebay n64 has crashed recently quite a few times when playing 007 Goldeneye James Bond,

it has a 3rd party 1mb expansion pack,

If you want to control the contrast more, use a pot on the resistor.
thats what im saying , that resistor may be responsible for the contrast!!!!!
