why do i have to substitute the leds in the PSone screen with white ones? wouldnt it still work with regular leds?

i've looked at several sites, including Mouser, and they seem to be out of the leds i need. radio shack doesnt have them, and digikey will want to charge me extra for only buying them. anybody know another good site to get 3 white leds?
