Custom Modding / Design Work
I am always open to trying new hacks and seeing what cool projects I can create for people. If you’d like to talk with me about getting something done, here are some cost breakdowns which will give you an idea of what goes into an average custom project.
- Design labor rate on custom jobs of $60 US dollars/hour.
- Average cost of a small custom case / enclosure is around $150 of the total cost. Laptop-style units are much more.
- LCD screens costs - Around $100 for small portables, $150 for medium-sized (like the Wii laptop) and $250 for laptop-sized.
- Assorted electronics and support circuitry - $25+. This does not include batteries.
- Assembly labor rate is $60 US dollars/hour.
- Cost of original hardware (the system you want hacked) is not included and typically I request customer buys and sends this to me.
On average a custom small portable project [think portable Atari, NES…] is usually around $400-$500, assuming you already own said system. Laptops usually start around $1000. Again this depends greatly on what you’re looking for. Please email me to discuss any ideas you might have.
Game systems I will not work on, so please don’t ask:
- Nintendo 64 (breaks too easily, just buy a DS)
- Colecovision (too big and complex with weird voltages)
- Intellivision (see above)
- Playstation 2 (though may do a How-To for Engadget one of these days)
Single-handed controllers for Gaming Accessibility

The first one I built. The new prototype is quite different.
We’re in the process of trying to get a single handed controller design for mass production. Currently it is in the revised prototype stage. If you’d like me to build you one in the meantime, please email me regarding which system you’d like it for. Thus far I’ve done them for the 360 but PS2/PS3 and I suppose even the Wii are possible. Hacking existing controllers in this way is very labor intensive so the average cost is around $350 for the case and labor, not including cost of the original controller. Please email me if you’d like to discuss having one built, or simply to express your interest, but remember we are working on a much better (and cheaper) option for the future.

Hacking Videogame Consoles - Book

Would you like to build your own portable game systems, or learn the general hacking skills required to make your own mods? Well, you’re in luck because I’ve written a book called “Hacking Videogame Consoles†and it contains complete, step-by-step instructions on how to make portable versions of the following systems:
- Atari 2600
- Nintendo 8-bit
- Super Nintendo 16-bit
- Playstation 1
It’s available in bookstores or can be ordered online from Amazon. Makes a great gift for a tinkering videogame fan! To learn more about the book, or for information, support, links and files if you’re already building one of the projects from it, click here.
Portable Game System Kits

Currently available are plastic case kits to build the projects found in my book. For a list of what’s avaliable, prices and ordering links, please click here.
NOTE: I do not sell, nor plan to make, any other custom kits than the ones described in the link above. These are the only kits avaliable from me, any other requests (ie, do you sell N64 portable cases) will not be responded to since I am stating here that the answer is no. The N64 is a super-flakey, easy to break system anyway, trust me you don’t want to hack it. (Just buy a DS)
If you’d like something custom done, see the “Custom Projects” section above. You may also be able to find someone on our forums who can help with any custom cases/kits that I am not currently doing myself.
