Well after a long process my new Halo 3-inspired Xbox 360 laptop is complete. It has some new features compared to past units:

Green is the new black
In a departure from my usual design asthetic, this one has a lot of surface detail. Click here for a larger version.

This unit, like all of them, was done by request and thus already spoken for. I do not plan to build any new Xbox 360 laptops in the near future, since they tend to be quite time consuming and I’d like a bit more variety in my life. That said, for the making-of story click below. Enjoy!

Note: Though I am tired of Xbox 360 laptops I am always up for other design consultation or custom jobs – email me.

It all started last summer when I was encouraged to build yet another Xbox 360 laptop. Often I feel like Rambo – you know, off at a monastery, retired, but always called back for “one more mission”. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to do a color scheme/design inspired by Halo 3, so I decided to build yet another.

More AI drawings

For this unit I decided to “skin” the sides with some thin engraving plastic material. This would give an overall shiny appearance and allow much finer detail on the sides of the unit, specifically all the hexagon-shaped air holes. I also had to work in an Xbox Live Vision camera, which the customer requested.

And yet more line drawings

Even though you cut my lense to pieces...
You must have a camera so people in Uno will know who bested them.

The first piece I made was the lid for the screen area. Most of the LCD screen was only 1/2″ thick but the circuit driver board on the back of it required some extra depth. Rather than make the entire lid the maximum depth I made most of it only as deep as the LCD, then made a raised hollow portion in the middle for the circuit board to rest inside. This gives the illusion of making the unit thinner, which is never a bad thing.

Sorry the photo is blurry - Bigfoot must have been nearby

For the internal layout I switched things up a bit from the last 2 laptops. The DVD drive is now on the right and the motherboard is rotated 90 degrees. I built the case in the usual way, plastic for the walls, aluminum for the main thick plates.

When you’re making a slim case fans are a big issue (and they smaller they are the more expensive they become). On the left side of the unit there is no motherboard, so I could use larger, better, cheaper 35mm fans. These are 12 volt units that I tied directly to the Xbox’s original fan connection, thus allowing the system to control them. (Something that apparently happens but I’ve never really witnesses) The rest of the fans are 5 volt, we’ll get to those in a moment.

This particular Xbox 360 laptop underwent several internal revisions along the way. The heatsinks changed, things were swapped around, it was quite an ordeal. Pictured above is an early revision, mostly to show the keyboard. Once again I grabbed a small keyboard off Tiger Direct, hacked it up, and worked it into the case, along with its USB hub. A small connector is added so the keyboard can be attached/detached from the base of the unit easily. Considering how much f’ing around and troubleshooting goes into one of these, it’s best to make it as easy to disassemble as possible.

All the power connections you will ever need

Unlike the last few laptops I completely rewired the power connector, so that it includes both the LCD and Xbox power signals in one plug. If it looks similar to an ATX power connector, well, that’s because it is! I bought the receptacle from Digi-Key, and the wire harness itself came from an old, often-cannibalized friend…

It... still... functions......!!!!

Some of you may recall the MGD computer from back in early 2004. It was originally built to record audio for the looping of Port Washington since at the time I didn’t have a laptop. Since then it has fallen victim to various scavenging raids – the power switch ended up in the Commodore 64 laptop, all of the cabling has been ripped out and it basically will never run again. Sad, yes but it is a far, far better thing it does than it has ever done before.

Who needs fancy cases when this works just fine?

Back to the project at hand! The next step was to see if a hand-wired HDMI-to-DVI connection would work. Couple reasons for doing this – there wasn’t enough room, specifically depth, in the lid portion of the case for a DVI plu. Second the shortest HDMI-DVI conversion cable (from Tiger Direct) is 3 feet long, whereas for this we only need about 8 inches. Feeling surely (and with a spare conversion cable to double-check pinouts) I snipped the DVI plug off the end and went to town.

Setting up yet another Xbox...

Success! The monitor I used – a 17″ widescreen Gateway – is exactly 1280×720, rather than the 1280×768 you often see in monitors of this size. This allows a pixel-perfect ratio when using the 720p HDMI connection. Since a lot of 360 games run at 720p natively (even if they upscale later) this is a sufficient resolution, especially since LCD’s don’t get into full 1920×1080 until at least the 22″ range.

At the A/V port, connect pins 20 and 24 both to ground to enable analog audio with HDMI video.

Let’s move onto sound. It is provided over HDMI (one of the only real differences between HDMI and DVI, as far as I can see) but this monitor doesn’t do sound. You can see where a sound amp could go on the board, but they didn’t include one – nuts. Anyway, this meant I needed to use the little analog/TOSlink dongle they include with some Xboxes. If you’ve read some of my previous articles on Engadget you’ll know there’s a few pins on the A/V port that tells the Xbox which mode to use, such as VGA, composite, SCART etc. It turns out that the dongle adds a new code, telling the system that the video is HDMI but the audio is coming from the old port as normal. If you do not set this pinout audio will not appear at the analog source pins.

Overview of the guts

Above is a photo showing everything in the base of the unit. This was just before I swapped out the Xbox motherboard for a new “Falcon” 65nm model, but it basically looked the same. For the audio amp I bought a cheap pair of computer speakers from Tiger Direct (originally to be used on the PS3 laptop but this unit came together first) and modded its circuitry to fit in the case. The speaker amp pulls power from the main 12 volt line so they turn on with the Xbox.

For an even snarkiner power-piggyback I grabbed 5 volts for the smaller heatsink fans from the 5 volt TOSlink line on the A/V cable. There are a lot more 5 volt sources available, mainly the USB, but these stay powered even if the system is off so I needed a 5 volt source that only turned on with the main system.

Fun fact – from units I have seen the PS3’s USB power turns off when the main system does, thus preventing you from charging controller when everything is off. The Xbox 360 and if I recall correctly the Wii both keep their USB powered even when off – thus making them better solutions for charging PS3 controllers when not in use. Amazing. Things like that non-withstanding, the PS3 is still the best-built system, but I digress.

Get in there!

Above is a view inside the unit with the lid being closed. It’s a tight fit but that’s the way things go in the mean streets of Verona.

Play Halo 3: Adventures of Purple Crotch with this new laptop

I...... AM...... TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!
The action of Halo 3 moves so fast my camera clearly couldn’t keep up.

There is one more chip...

Shown above is the new 65nm CPU in the Falcon unit. The main IC itself is smaller than it used to be and thus smaller than the unchanged GPU die. The heat spreader area (heat spreader being about the lamest-sounding term on Earth) is also smaller and now rectangle shaped instead of square. As mentioned in my earlier post this CPU runs a lot cooler than the old one and even within this unit about 20 degrees cooler, on average, than the GPU.

What follows are some general photos and notes about this unit:

Big brother is watching
Here I am, taking a photo of a photo of myself, in an exercise of supreme redundancy. I have rewired a lot of crap in my day but the Xbox Live Vision camera is one of the most persnickety things I have come across. In order to work properly it had to have a shielded connection literally from the USB area on the motherboard all the way to the camera. Not even the SATA cable or DVI was that picky. At first I thought I had ruined the camera so I bought another one, for no reason. Oh well, maybe I’ll work it into my next project…

Close-up of the USB ports. I didn’t want to specifically “rip off” Halo 3 graphics for obvious reasons but I used a lot of the same concepts. Specifically there’s lots of lines connecting things, the colors orange and green (like the interception-mad Packers) 45/90 degree angles and the ever-present hexagon. Every vent hole on this unit is a small hexagon, which took longer to draw up than I care to admit.

You see, when two consoles love each other very, very much...
An Xbox case sitting on the laptop for scale purposes.

Another view with the unit running. Sorry the flash kind of washes out the LCD.

Power Supply - like the Rock Band.
The power supply even has trendy styling to match the case.

Left side exhaust ports.

You can crank this baby up pretty loud
Volume slider on the right side of the unit.

An Xbox case sitting behind the laptop for depth reference purposes. You can also see the lid latch open button, disc eject, IR sensor and the small controller sync button. My usual goal with projects like this is to make the finished product no thicker than the original console, even though an LCD and screen lid has been added. The PS3 laptop will follow this tradition, mostly because the PS3 is pretty damn thick to begin with and there’s nowhere to go but thinner 😉

I hope you have enjoyed my latest “Making Of” article. Sorry if I didn’t include more of the usual BS, been pressed for time. More projects are coming, so the long Benheck drought is finally over!

  2. You’re right about the PS3 having no power on USB when powered off.

The 360 goes into “low power mode” if you have a controller plugged in with a play and charge kit before you shut the system off. When the controller is fully charged the system completely powers down. Same goes for downloads if you have that feature activated it will complete downloads in the “low power mode” as well. The 360 USB doesn’t stay on when the system is fully down or when plugging in a controller after it is already off. The low power mode was added to the 360 in the fall update I think.

  3. Oh and I almost forgot, awesome laptop.

Watch out for those late night rounds of UNO. I won’t even begin to describe things that have been shown on the XBL cams, especially if there is a girl in the mix, guys go nuts, no pun intended.

“Strange Things are Afoot at the Circle K”

  4. HOT DAMN!

People would pay you to make those for them. If it were legal, of course (I dunno if MS would allow such nonsense)… You probably hear this all the time but you’ve REALLY outdone yourself on this baby…

  5. Great mod! I have a question about getting a new chip for an LCD screen though: I have a 19 LCD with a good screen and backlights but a bad controller chip. Does anybody know a good guide for replacing that part? Let me know please!

  6. What are you talking about anon? ‘Course it’s legal. Would anybody prosecute you for chopping up a VCR? It just really really really voids the warranty.

    Awesome laptop! I want!

  7. I’m trying not to say that making a 360 laptop is illegal, it’s just that… I dunno… Maybe if you just bought a 360 and then sold these laptops? I dunno. It’s Microsoft, they’d find something.

  8. For the LCD part, there ARE smaller full-HD LCDs. The current line of T61P-Thinkpads sport some 15.4 inch widescreen LCDs with a native resolution of 1920×1080. The only problem might be to get a converter for these LCDs to run off a normal DVI input instead of getting their signals directly from the laptop mobo.
These converter boards exist, but are normally extremely expensive. But hey, if a client comes along who says that money is no problem…

  9. Where do you get those talking Live vision cameras from?, i want one ;).

I would buy these if they made them for real, portable 360 gaming, yes please !

  10. “People would pay you to make those for them. If it were legal, of course (I dunno if MS would allow such nonsense)… You probably hear this all the time but you’ve REALLY outdone yourself on this baby…”

Dude try reading the page 😐 , 1 people do pay him, 2 he doesnt want to spend his life making them + 3 so fekin what? MS can kiss my and prob bens arse 😉

  11. awsome mod i tried it befor and failed horribly…u know just throwing this out nthere how much would this cost for a sales price(metephorically speaking)?

  12. Wow, this is probably the greatest console mod I have EVER SEEN! I would totally buy that, because it seems well worth it, and because I know Ben is really skilled at making reliable mods. AWESOME laptop…just breathtaking…Ben Heck, you are one smart guy, and I salute you. Keep making those mods!

  13. Hello,

Im a kid thats 11 i realy like your work i wont to do the same as you when im older iv been practising can you email me a good project thats quit easy i hope you have a good day

  14. Hey AE, a 360 + LCD would drain a battery faster than you do by sucking the life of the creative people in this world with your negativity.

If you want to get really anal, as you seem to be:

    > No battery == No Laptop.

== is normally expressed as an equality operator, my laptop runs fine even though the battery has died and runs from 240V power supply. Thus no battery != no laptop.

    > Battery = Laptop.

= is normally expressed as an assignment operator. Thus a battery, whilst it may make up part of a laptop, does not equal a Laptop.

    Epic loser!

  15. Sweet! I can’t believe you managed to get it all in there! You have inspired me! My mom has this old windows 95 laptop and it’s the perfect size for my ps2 or ps1.

Oh and just in case nobody answers the “kolton”. Maybe try buying an old laptop and taking out all the stuff. Then all you’d really have to do is figure out how to plug in the screen and power source. Oh and you’d have to cut a hole in the laptop to put discs in…I guess that’s kinda a draw back huh? Well it’s the easiest thing I could think of.

  16. Great Mod!

Just fyi, that isn’t a Heat spreader, thats the actual Die, if it had a Heat spreader, it would look somewhat more like a Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Phenom CPU, not like a Athlon XP.

  17. Hey Ben just wanted to say kudos on a great new 360 Laptop. I have been tracking your progress for some time and I am very impressed with you accomplishments. Here’s hoping that you put this new build into a guide of some sort so that some of us who are brave enough to try it out can do so. I for one would love to take a crack at this project. Again thanks for all your hard work and for making the 360 even better than it already is. Looking forward to your PS3 laptop 🙂

  18. I have been following Ben Heck’s mods ever since he released the first one. This is a really great mod that I’m going to try to attempt very soon. My only feedback is that I liked the older cases which were a single color better then this one, but there are so many new improvements from this model then in the first ones! Great Job Ben, can’t wait for the PS3 Laptop!

  19. He should have put one of those XFPS things in it so that you can use wasd and mouse, that would have been cool.

  20. Nice looking laptop but it’s about time to hear that your making a PS3 laptop. I can’t wait to see it 🙂

  21. Ben, I’d really be interested in you providing casing for your more popular mods (like the xbox 360 and wii). Some of us are awesome with electronics, and aren’t quite daunted by the idea of rewiring our favorite consoles, but get into case fabrication and we cower in the corner.

You should give some serious thought to that.

  22. Wow again I am practically speechless with your work. This version’s design is fantastic and I hope we see more detail like this in your next projects.

  23. Great job! I’d buy one in a heartbeat.

I agree that selling casing would be a good idea. Please do.

  24. Okay, I have to admit. I’m an amateur that is inspired. I would like to build this thing, the problem is, even if I am able to do all the technical stuff I don’t have anything to make the casing. Is there anyway you can make the casing for me and I’ll buy it off of you? Name your price. Email me back.

  25. Damn I would buy this in a heartbeat. Im only at small time modding since i got expelled. hehe i stole 12 laptops from my school. They only found two the rest had been well made into a better machine.

I would make this myself but im too short on cash to break a 360. Id trust you more how much woud you sell this for.

Do you do custom orders? If not how about casing then? I’ll make the 360 laptop myself but as for th case I don’t have the experience or the tools, and I was going to get a new laptop anyway, this mac blows.

Drop me an email at r2h4y6s8@hotmail.com

  27. Its kinda funny, the other day I was thinkin about how cool the halo Xbox would loook if “that ben heck dude” took on the progect. well i think it turnmed out nice, thanks for quinching my thought

  28. I was wondering if you were to connect a laptop battery to this xbox mod how would you go about it, I know that the battery would probably live for about 30 mins, but it would be a laugh walking around to my mates playing on the xbox 360. Obviously I would prefer that the battery could be charged with the xbox power lead as well. If it can be done or some one has tried it could someone email me with the details, pictures and step by step instructions. I would like to do this for a project at the sixth form college that I go to. Thanks for any help in advance!

  29. you should think about batteries for it so you can take next gen gameing anywhere and maybe a ps3 laptop

  30. Hello my name is joey, and i would like to know if you are selling your xbox360 portable

  31. If I wanted to start doing something like this, where should I go to research this stuff.

  32. Please for the love of god stop asking “How much?” “Can I buy one?” “Will you do special orders?”

Ben Repeatedly says that he does these maybe once or twice a year and has indicated that they are in the thousands (plural, not just one thousand but several) of dollars to build. If you want to know more baout building one look at his previously posted on Endgaget instructions on how to do it. If you are an amateur who is intrigued and wants to do this stop right now and talk yourself out of it. Yes it would be cool. Yes it would look great. No it is not cheap and no you need to know what you are doing before you even think about trying. Start small. Do a modchip installation on an original Xbox. If/When you screw that up you have only burned a $100.00 or so investment. You mess up an X360 laptop and you have just burned a $300.00 – $400.00 machine, and probably the $200.00 or so LCD monitor too. Not to mention the other junk that goes into this like the keyboard etc.

I’m not trying to stifle your innovation, but you should always start small and go from there. I’m building a new DVD drive for my original xbox because if I screw it up I’m out one free DVD drive i got from a local computer shop. If money is not an object and a lack of skill is not a concern, feel free to toss your hard earned cash around and see what happens. If you are serious about this and want to do it, start small. The original xbox is a decent starting point because a lot of it has been mapped out. Put in a mod chip. Try to wire in RCA plugs and drill some holes in the back of the box so it doesnt require the Xbox cable adapter (its a bit tricky). Build your own DVD drive that works with the box. Maybe find one with a dead power supply from ebay and wire it up with a ATX power supply. I have learned the hard way that if you start off with something bigger than you can chew, you will get really frustrated, discouraged, and angry. No one wants to see a grown man cry.

Oh and one final note: Always Always Always ensure that you have the right tools for the job. If you are unsure go to a “real” electronics shop and tell them flat out what you are doing and ask for their recommendations. Don’t trust the shops where the motto is “You’ve got questions, we’ve got blank stares” as they will likely have no clue what you are talking about.

  33. My kids are crazy about xbox. Everytime I have to shut their TV down. I always believed xbox is addiction and now scientists got proof of it 🙂 . But all in all great console , much better than playstation (yes i like xbox).

Hey , by the way , nice blog , I really enjoyed info in it .

    ANYWAY;

I have also been following many of your projects and I’m still loving the completed projects, i have to agree though that the original 360 laptop case looked better than this one (although this one does look pretty sick, just kinda looks like it was made from cardboard). Lookin forward to seein the ps3 laptop.

  35. What a pice of crap, i have nothing against xbox but this … device looks awful. You are good at electronics but really bad designer.

  36. Hi, I was just wondering, Im planning to make an xbox360 laptop (elite or not), would it make a huge difference to the design of the case if it was using a 20″ LCD? apart from the obvious additions in length and width.
    Thanks alot.

  37. Hi, Im planning on making an xbox 360 laptop (havent decided on elite or not), and I was wondering if putting a 20″ screen
instead of the 17″ one, would it change any of the dimensions of the laptop (other than length and width) and if any of the components would need to be moved. thanks alot, and amazing work

  38. For what its worth, there are 1080p 17″ LCD’s with double backlights. They are crazy expensive, but Toshiba uses it in the Qosmio G35 if I recal correctly. Its kinda silly though as the text is crazy small.

  39. Hey,

my name is Michael caserta and if you can make this xbox 360 elite laptop xbox live anywere and
I mean anywere even places without wifi or even internet I will offer you $7,000 dollers paypal for it but you have to email me some proof that it dose work in places without wifi or internet of any kind remember this is 7 grand-($7,000) paypal and i know you can’t pass up an offer like that.

P.S. if you do pull this off it will mean that you are the ultimite hacker because it has never been done before. plus if you do yu’ll be $7,000 dollers richer anyway. so i mean come on man what do you got to
lose accept gaining $7,000 dollers paypal.

    My email: playboydumass09@yahoo.com

(please do this deal for me!!)

  40. hay Michael Caserta it’s impossible for xbox live to work if ther’s no internet. and to get live anywhere you’ll need one of those satellite card so that you can play xbox live anywhere. you didn’t make any sence in the last post.

  41. Hi Ben I will send u my 360 and let u cutomize my 360 into that laptop I’m willing to spend 6 Grand but msg me on AIM ShiZamZ or xbox live FeaR ShiZamZ ok thanks

  42. hey,

There is a way do you know the iPhones internert is just as fast as DSL.
so if you hacked into their internet and used it as an xbox live source it
would be able to work. Now I know you can’t use the xbox live wireless
adaptor but you probley could if you modify it a little bit.

So comon man email me my offer still stands: playboydumass09@yahoo.com

  43. Hey,
    To GamersNirvana
I think what you should be requesting is something like inbuilt HSDPA or WiMax although I am not sue thats possible. What I would do is get an asus EEE pc with windows, set it up for HSDPA with a usb modem and create a portable network between the asus EEE pc and the xbox. Not really portable when it gets to that stage though.

Hello, I am a gamer who is interested in buying one of your laptop modded Xbox360 machines. I am about to be deployed to Iraq so it would be an awesome thing to have. I have read that you are ceasing your modding but, I beg you PLEASE reconsider. I will send you another request after I have had enough time to save up for one of your higher end mods which should be around Dec-Jan. I hope that you will grant me my request. Thank you and have a nice day.

  53. To anyone who is interested in buying an Xbox 360 laptop:

My friend and I are building an Xbox 360 Elite Laptop and are interested in selling it. We are following some of Ben Heck’s designs, but we have some additional improvements, including:

Removable 120gb hard drive (so you can swap drives)

In-screen wireless antenna, so it doesn’t stick out on the back.

We were thinking of making it GoW/ GOW2 themed, with the Crimson Omen on the top, Lancers as the vents, etc. We are planning on not having a keyboard or live camera, but as we are interested in selling, we are open to new ideas.

If you are a SERIOUS buyer, feel free to contact me at rloomis5001@email.vccs.edu. By “Serious buyer” I mean someone who is willing to spend several thousand US dollars (although we have no problems with foreign buyers. If we do not receive any reasonable bids, then we will put it on ebay for auction. This is your chance to get it before the auction!!! We should be finished in a month or so.

When you contact me, please leave your name, number, and AIM handle if you have one. Also, a verified paypal account is preferred. If we accept your bid, then the laptop will probably be put up for sale on e-bay as a buy-it-now, and you will be the only one notified. So pretty much you are guaranteed of getting it sold to you. This way we don’t have to worry about someone not paying. If you have another method that is reasonable, then please feel free to suggest it.

  56. Ben, that 360 laptop is awesome, have you ever thought of making your own video game console? I would definitely get one if you made one. Also, I know everyone says this and your tired of building them but I’d love to get my hands on one of those laptops, any chance at all for mass production from a company like Bungie? It could go along with their new Halo 3 game, just a thought. Take Care, I hope your having a great weekend ^_^

  57. Hey, i was wondering if there are any detailed schematics for this. i would like to make a project out of it. also, how much cash in parts other than the 360 itself is this?

  63. Ben baby, you have the ability to use the force or something with ehacking frustration! May you keep the vibe going. AFter the kids and full time work -i gave up modding the VCR etc and just bought new crap every 5 years like everyone else.

Thanks for taking the time to share the info. Your radiator design is so simple and gorgeous you should patent it before some steals it, but it must be too late already.

  67. IF YOU MAKE ME ONE I WILL NEGOITATE WITH YOU FOR A PRICE AND GIVE YOU HALO 3 LEGENDARY EDITION.

  68. I have built a “Laptop” as well though it is not as sleek and professional looking as you master pieces. I am a huge fan of you work and thought I might ask if you ever considered using an ITX psu to avoid the extra fan noise and internalize the power supply to increase portability of the unit.

If I am over stepping my bounds in making recommendations, please let me know. If you are interested in hearing my ideas/project, Let me know. My email is listed.
